Getting started with Spectrum

Find a gemstone geode, use Colorful World, and make your first Pigment Pedestal craft.

Spectrum banner

Spectrum is a progression and exploration-based magic mod where you combine colours to create magical tools and machines, with the ultimate goal of discovering what lies beneath the once-impenetrable Bedrock floor.

In the process, you will gain a new perspective and knowledge of things that have always been around you. Things you have always noticed as being out of place, but have never been able to put your finger on because you have lacked the knowledge and tools to observe them. Now is the time!

Step 1: Find a gemstone geode

  1. Find an amethyst geode deep underground, a citrine geode around sea level, or a topaz geode in hills and mountains.
  2. Break a cluster and pick up a shard.
  3. Open the Colorful World book you receive. It is Spectrum’s guidebook.

Step 2: Use the guidebook

  1. Read the pages that are already available.
  2. Keep the book with you. New pages appear after you find items, build structures, and make crafts.
  3. Check the book when EMI shows a locked Spectrum recipe. It points you toward the next thing to find.

You do not need to read the whole book now. It fills in as you play.

Step 3: Craft a Pigment Pedestal

  1. Follow the recipe in Colorful World to make a Pigment Pedestal.
  2. Put the ingredients for a pedestal recipe on the pedestal.
  3. Give the pedestal a redstone pulse to start the craft.

Most Spectrum items are made on the Pigment Pedestal.

Step 4: Make gem powder

  1. Put gemstone shards under an anvil and crush them.
  2. Or use a Create crushing setup. It does the same job on Alice.
  3. Save the powder. Pedestal recipes use it often.

Step 5: Make your first craft

  1. Pick any Spectrum recipe that Colorful World shows you.
  2. Make it on the Pigment Pedestal.
  3. Check the book again after the craft. It may have a new page for you.

When you get a toast

Spectrum sometimes shows a toast without saying what changed. Something new can be visible in the world now.

Go mining or explore for a while. You may find new ores, colored trees, or shooting stars.

Playing with friends

Your friend may not see the same Spectrum blocks you see yet. You each need to make your own discoveries.

You can still share a base, chests, and resources. Work through the early steps together, then compare what each of you has found.

When a recipe asks for a mixed pigment, use Mixing colors.
