Since the server is currently down I thought I would ask about this since I have been curious about it since I came back to skcraft. It seems lately that the server has been crashing and lagging much more than I remember back before this most recent reset. This is by no means an attempt to troll, flame, or complain. I greatly appreciated sk and all the moderators for managing this server and allowing me to play on it. I am just wondering what the instability stems from. Is it a certain mod that's being unruly, aging hardware, heavier user load?
The cause of the crash and the downtime at the current moment was from tonius11 trying to link ComputerCraft with a signal box, which the server did not like. When it comes to the "instability". The server at the current moment is a lot stabler then it was at the start of the reset apart from the odd crash every so often. But to my knowledge, it is none of the things that you mention apart from mods being unruly and at some times, user load; Which is to be expected since the server/client has around 120 mods installed. When it comes to the lag....it comes and goes, the issue is unknown to the server populous, but apart from the TPS going bad after time, it really shouldn't lag all that much.
It's a combination of all three, at least in my opinion. Mods increase the load for sure and Alice is using many mods, but having many users that are chunk-loading and automating stuff increase this load even more. SKCraft has many players and many are doing things like I mentioned before. This can be compensated with better hardware or limitations, but only to a certain point (also acquiring new hardware causes more costs and root server already cost a lot of money monthly) Crashes on the other hand are most likely caused by bugs in mods, at least I experienced this kind of crashes.
Does the server need more RAM? We could have a ram fundraiser! Thanks for the responses, I just like to better understand why things are happening. No matter what you play, the server will never have 100% uptime and will have it's own issues with latency and bugs and such but knowing what causes it is better than just wondering to me lol
That doesn't prevent low TPS, what causes lag. TPS depend on the CPU performance, so far I know. So having a CPU fundraiser would make more sense
Does anyone know what the specs of our current hardware is? Honestly I wouldn't mind forking over a little cash for the good of the server.
The only thing I know, is that the server is run on a ramdisk, but i can't remember how much it stores for the life of me. So you'd probably have to ask sk himself, if you wanted to know the exact specs.
The server is using a Intel Core i7-2700 (or similiar) and 64GB RAM. That's what I've heard so far at least, can't promise that these infos are 100% right, sorry.
