Pick your processor first. The current market gimmick is to give you as many cores/threads as possible. Very rarely will it benefit you to have any more than 4 thread processing. Focus on the speed instead. High end right now is pretty much anything above 3.6Ghz. After you pick the processor, look up the top rated motherboards compatible with it. The speed the motherboard can transfer data to the hard drive seems to be the current bottleneck to look for, 6GB/s should be good. Also, I would highly recommend getting 2 video cards and running them in SLI, you really shouldn't need more than one but they are all designed with that in mind recently and a lot of computer freezes/crashes I've seen in the last couple years have been from videocards going bad being run by themselves. Watch out for tri-channel RAM, a lot of motherboards have been hyping it recently and it sounds cool, but quad is so much better, and your motherboard will still work with dual-channel that way. (with tri-channel it won't)

Ok Im Seeing that Intel processors are a lot more expensive have more cores and less speed than AMD which would you prefer? intel or AMD because Im looking at an AMD Dual core 3.8ghz for only 50 US dollars.

Not necessarily... Yes I usually end up going with intel as well, but it goes back and forth as to who actually gives better performance.

"I'm Intel all the way." -Siioh 2014

HOWEVER, I suggest you take a look at this article (http://tinyurl.com/nv5glj5) which gives good reasons as for why you should go for Intel. As far as I know, that AMD processor seems pretty well, considering its clock speed and number of cores. Of course, this should suffice for gaming needs, assuming you have a good graphics card (or two moderate graphics card with SLI), but if you want to "future proof" this computer or use it for "cpu intensive work"...you're probably going to need a larger budget.

Cuz you can never ever have nuff processing powa, amirite?

A good i5 can never steer you wrong. I wouldn't get anything more than that though, you'll likely not use it, and it's more expensive.

Also, DDR4 has started to come on the market, atleast in Norway. Perhaps looking into some motherboards that are compatible with it?

The only supporting system is intel X99 and the prices are massive right now :(

If you want i7 performance without paying i7 price you should get an Intel Xeon E3-1230v3 this is built on the same Haswell architecture as its desktop counterpart the i7 4770 however the Xeon is not overclockable and the price is a hell of a lot lower.

Motherboard isn't really a major issue if you arent going to overclock since most of the more expensive boards offer the same features but with more power phases and uprated VRM circuits so that over volting is supplied as clean stable power rather than surging and spiking which may damage the CPU. If you go with a fairly cheap one just pick a good vendor like ASUS/Gigabyte or even the up and coming MSI.

Just be carefull about the socket number, if you get a processor with 1155 socket but a motherboard with 2011 it won't work :p

    Well Haswell is 1150 socket and supports the H81 H85 Q85 Q87 H87 Z87 chipsets.

Also, the new Z97 and H97 chipsets should also support the Haswell CPU's

Personally after the experience I have had with Intel/AMD recently I will never ever buy an AMD CPU again unless there is something real revolutionary. Yes they are cheap but the performance is definately reflected by that.

Personally I would go with either the Xeon I posted earlier or this cheaper i5. (i5 4570) and an appropriate Z87 Motherboard.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/tsDzYJ There is this for $313 dollars or if you want the i7 equivalent Xeon it will set you back another $50

If you are looking to do video editting/photo editting then you may benefit from having the extra cpu threads.

Im raising my budget to 250 max you guys persuaded me to focus more on the processor than the memory and harddrive.
Ill look into the xeon processor

Memory isn't that expensive, but I would suggest getting 8GB. 8GB of RAM will only cost around £60-£90 depending on the speed, and it's definitely an improvement over just 4GB, as with 8GB you can dedicate 4GB of RAM directly to Alice / Java and still have the capacity left to run other programs in the background.

You won't want to worry about the hard drive much, especially with a limited budget. Get a decent Samsung 1TB hard drive and you should be good to go, especially since hard drive speed won't be much of a concern when playing multiplayer.

As for the processor, I had a quick look around and the Intel i5 4750 looks pretty good. It has an okay clock speed (3.2GHz) and fits in to your budget at ~$200 from http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116896 .
If you need something better, I would suggest the Intel i5 4760K. This has a slightly better clock spped (3.4GHz) but is unlocked, meaning you can overclock it if you need it to be faster. It comes in at $235 from http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116899

If you can't currently afford a dedicated graphics card, one thing you could do is overclock the standard Intel HD 4600 that comes with the processor. One of my friends overclocked an intel HD 4600 and could run Skyrim on High, so it should be able to handle Alice on medium settings until you can get a dedicated graphics card.
