well how about a low chance to drop XP on smooth stone. low enough to not be worth your time to "Farm" but high enough to be3 a nice bonus. say a 1 in 100 chance for smooth stone and a 1/50 chance for replaceable ores and a 1/10 for non placable ores (and look for silk touch enchantment if lifted with silk touch no xp will be granted)

You all keep talking about Silk Touch as if it's hugely imbalanced... I say ignore it. Silk touch is a PAIN to enchant. And even if you drop 1xp per (example) diamond ore mined, getting it all, replacing it, and mining again is not an efficient way to get XP. And after only 1500xp, your diamond pick is gone. That's an ABYSMAL waste of an insanely valuable enchant, and if someone is stupid enough to do it, more power to them.

I think XP from mining ores would be really nice, cause there are not even enough mobs to kill. Maybe 1 in 50 for mining stone would be nice also.

Think of the amount I would have got from mining out Vanhalla if this had been active O.O

this may be the case however better earned than if you were (ab)using a mob spawner to gain XP

I've got a mod on my server that gives XP when mining, it lets me control which blocks give XP and how many blocks it requires to break in order to obtain any XP from them, for example, 20 stone blocks = 5 xp or something like that. So, really it'd even work with ore, etc. I wouldn't see XP from mining as a bad thing, just have to regulate it. Its also setup so that you can't get experience from blocks placed by players.

I would suggest that if you decide to use something like EXPMiner, don't re-allow mob spawners. As said before, it'd end up getting overly abused.

I think that XP should only be obtained from the first modification of a block. For example, if there are any logs on LogBlock then the block will not give you XP, but if there are recorded changes in that block, then no XP will come out of that block. I also like the idea of more valuable items worth more. For example:
    Untouched dirt: 1 XP / 50 blocks
    Untouched sand: 1 XP / 60 blocks
    Stone: 1 XP / 80 blocks
    Log: 1 XP / 30 blocks
Ores would profit much more, as in:
    Redstone: 2 XP / 1 Redstone Ore
Lapis Lazuli Ore 1 Lapis Ore
Coal Ore: 1 XP / 3 Coal Ore
Iron Ore: 1 XP / 1 Iron (iron is worth enough anyways)
    Gold Ore: 5 XP / 1 Gold
    Obsidian: 3 XP / 1 Obsidian
    Diamond Ore: 15 XP / 1 Diamond

*Note: XP= Experience Orb, not level of XP.*

This is a really good idea! But as others said, keep the XP low, so that nobody can exploit it.

Edit: Maybe get EXP from losing hunger? 1xp per hunger point is not a big deal... and i guess it would be easy to implement. Or not?

Why dont you just implement a Skills system... That might be more worth it... you could even do both... That way people can either spend levels on enchanted items or upgrading there skills...I have looked into a few mods that do sort of mmorpg style stuff that includes this but i think that would go way beyond what we are looking for (like Hero Craft)... Anyways i think that it would take some work to implement skills but in the long run it might be worth it...

For example you could upgrade mining speed..
strength (slightly more damage when killing things with fist...or sword)
adrenaline boost... give you sprinting boost after killing something...(that would be cool)
Maybe something that allows a slower decrease on hunger bar...
    faster health regeneration
more armour/defence.....(thats another thing... maybe sk should code in new armours...wood..or stone..cuz leather can be a pain to gather...a and doesnt last as long)

anyways these are ideas to take into consideration...

    Have fun...

I think this is a great suggestion, at this rewards you from being active.

there is a small exploit with it (jumping with hunger from rotten flesh) but I think the rewards are low enough that this is not a problem.

Losing hunger points from Food Poisoning would probably not count toward gaining xp.

yep, and as a result, giving you additional exp (due to food regain), but like I said, it's so small, it's not a problem. (how many food can you lose in 30 sec?)

I really like this idea. with the way mine carts have been modded on the server, gold has very little value, and this would give it a special use and real worth.

I think it would be best if only naturally generated ores would offer up exp and the benefits should match up with the way exp is given for different mobs, so coal would provide a small exp boost, and diamond would provide a larger boost.
