As you may be aware SKCraft has been a community primarily focused around minecraft for many years. The game does not have the popularity that it used to and many of us still play for the community and not necessarily the game. I had an idea to collect some thoughts from you guys if there is any game servers that you think we could run and incorporate into the community so there is other areas for us to explore for the community. tl;dr: What additional game servers would you like to see from us?
Starbound and Terraria would be nice but because the world data and player data are separate it makes it easier to cheat in :/ Edit:Also the games that have channels in Teamspeak like Don't Starve Together.
Terraria has TShock, which you can do enforced server-side inventories to remove the ability to cheat. Can't remember if you can do that in Starbound as of yet. DST though, that'd be fun. Server would have to be pause-when-no-players though (config option). Obviously we can only have so many servers, but here's a list of multiplayer games I enjoy (not including previously mentioned games): King Arthur's Gold, CS:S, L4D2 (already kind of a thing), Garry's Mod and JC2:MP. i expected there to be more oh well
CSGO would be cool like a 5v5 private comp game mode with all of us in it would be cool and definitely way easier to maintain then MC, but the popularity of it may be a problem
In my opinion branching out wouldn't be a good idea, since we don't have that big of a community to afford it. Some people like CS:GO better than L4D2 for an example. Alice is still holding up 20 people almost constantly but how do you think it's going to be in 2 months? Like it always has been - groups of people splitting up in GTA V/Rocket League/PAYDAY/etc. Maybe I'm too pessimistic, but these are my thoughts on the matter.
I like CSGO as well, however I'm not sure how well a casual server would do, it might be better to either organize in-house matches hosted by someone or just get some regulars to do competitive (against randoms) together, maybe we should make a thread with a spreadsheet of people's ranks/profiles (we have a steam thread already, don't we?)
I currently have a DST server running. No one's been on it for months. Everything has probably burned down.
Um, I hate to once again be the wet blanket of the server, but wouldn't any efforts to support another game amongst the community BY DEFINITION detract support from Minecraft, the main thrust of the community? Given that there's still multiple issues that need to be smoothed out, and doubtless other issues that'll crop up later, all this means is that resources that would go to Minecraft will be diverted to non-Minecraft matters. Considering how many problems can only be solved by single individuals within the community, to have those people have split duties between two radically different games is just asking for trouble. IF AND ONLY IF the fixers amongst the community unanimously feel like they can handle a second game within the community should this be done. I'd rather we have one game done well, than two games done poorly because there's not enough manpower or hours to do two games. A Jack of All Trades is master of none.
Most other game servers are more stable, due to the lack if mishing and mashing code made from 50 different people that don't have an established standard.
That would be interesting if it were a multiplayer game. It would take a ton communication to do anything together like build a station or connect fuel tanks together or whatever you do in that game.
Sounds like a job for a modpack. http://d-mp.org/ is currently the most advanced multiplayer mod. Haven't played it recently so I cant say how good it is now, but it was working last time I tried (kinda buggy though). The problem is that it doesn't have support for science/career yet, and the original dev seems to have just stopped work on it, but is "very pro-fork" according to his forum post. So KSP isnt totally impossible.
