Every time I try to launch I get this message:

The game is running. Please wait.
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Initial heap size set to a larger value than the maximum heap size
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM warning: ignoring option MaxPermSize=3000M; support was removed in 8.0
    Picked up _JAVA_OPTIONS: -Xmx512M
    Process ended with code: 1

    Any ideas?

    Which OS are you running?

How much RAM do you have?

Umm, why did you try setting the permgen to 3GB? you need to set the max ram not permgen. Xmx3G

Your minimum amount of RAM to allocate to Minecraft appears to be larger than the maximum amount.

And yes, that is way too much permgen. Not that it matters; it gets ignored anyway because it was removed in Java 8.

These settings are sufficient. As Tonius said the permgen will be discarded as you are running java 8 but put 256 in anyway!

max memory should be 4096 tbh if you have that much RAM to spare

Why? Then minecraft reserves it, and other programs like google chrome can't use it. If it was Alice I would say 4GB if you can spare it, vanilla though? 2GB should be more then plenty...

Alice runs flawlessly with 2gb assigned. it takes more than the assigned too for the jvm itself.

Ehh, 2.25 then. My point: Don't give vanilla 4GB of ram. Again, you may have issues with other programs open (Chrome with tabs, spotify, skype, are all big offenders).

    Using these settings, same result.

AH NO I know what your problem is, you've got a _JAVA_OPTIONS environment variable set.

    Steps for solution:
    1) Open Start menu, typ "env" and click "Edit the system enviroment variables"

    2) Click "Enviroment Variables"

    3) Locate the "_JAVA_OPTIONS" entry under "System variables"

    4) Select "_JAVA_OPTIONS" and click the "Delete" button.

That should fix it! Note the variable /might/ be called "JAVA_OPTIONS" but if so just delete that one instead.

    Sorry for the long post!

Yes it is, but so is the other box. When I tried to put in the file path in case that was a problem, nothing happened.

    That didn't work either.

What?!?!?!? Two errors have been solved using that method, and yours isn't?! Absurd!

Anyway, looks like you still have a _JAVA_OPTIONS parameter set, which will be in the "Configure Java" program. Search the Start menu for "java" and click "Configure Java", go to the "Java" tab, click "View" and then check the "Runtime Parameters" box is clear, under both System and User.

Wait, are you trying to get onto vincent? You should try the new MC launcher, it has the jvm builtin.

Has this been solved? If not, we need more information...there should not be any limiter upon the maximum amount of RAM set if you've truly tried the solutions above.
