As you may have seen recently in the shoutbox of the forum there has been talks about a classic server of an old alice modpack. As you may know the release of 1.7 was great and infact very successful, with the help of our modpack team. The server has slowly got worse and worse and crashes very often. Because of this the community has started to crumble which in my eyes after a five year run is sad. I would like to propose that we bring back some nostalgic times by creating a classic server as stated above. Since it's christmas time I would like to wish each and everyone of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of the staff at SKCraft. Let's hope 2015 can be the mark of Alice's resurrection!
I wish the best of luck to what happens and I hope the server will continue to run and become more popular again. Happy Holidays to everyone! Seeing a little bit and hearing a lot of how far this server has come I have faith in the community and staff members to resurrect the server
I wish you guys the best of luck to try and revive the SKC feeling. However, I fear that opening a classic server will have not the desired results because people have grown accustomed to the more indepth versions of the mods present in 1.4.7 or 1.2.5. Its the same kind of issue that happens with nostalgia sentiments in things like WoW expansions. In theory going back sounds great but when you do a double take on it most of the good feeling you remember was because you were new to the concept and not because the mods or server were set up to be particularly enjoyable, or challenging. I think ultimately the only way to revive the notion of the server would be to go forward and do a full re-design of the modpack using the latest and best cutting edge mods with new balance structure and all that, but ofcourse, that would again take significant new manpower and motivation. I do not believe just re-opening Alice status quo 1.4.7 or 1.2.5 would result in revived interest, but feel free to prove me wrong. Anyways, good luck on you
Yea me and a couple friends from alice went back to try older versions. 1.2.5 was enjoyable but extremely frustrating with so many missing features but 1.4.7 was quite fun. I'd definitely go for a 1.4.7 server.
I joined skcraft during 1.6 and have never played in 1.4.7. As far as I have heared it was one of the best versions of Alice. I would like to see and play this version along with the other players! Edit: Don't forget Vincent
Pretty much spot on. If this would happen, I just feel it would die out pretty quickly due to lack of interest. Most of the work on 1.7.10 was done by me, and I have lost pretty much all motivation to work on the public Alice modpack, or to keep the server alive and running at all. This, combined to sk being busy, results in next to nothing happening.
I started playing Minecraft in 1.5 and a long time played in 1.6. industrial server. On older versions only heard. Therefore, refrain from voting, so far. I think, is more important the stability of the server, than the version number. One hundred mods to make compatible and work together without glitches probably a very difficult job. May be better to limit the number of major mods. Thematically or in some other way. Admins will be easier to cope with it. On the other hand, as I understood, SK server is advanced technology, the latest version, the study of new mods. It is also very interesting, but unfortunately does not add stability. To sum up, I personally would have preferred the new version, but stable, even at the expense of substantial restrictions mods. But also on 1.4.7 or 1.2.5 it would be interesting to see.
While I partially agree with wolfenstein19, I think older server is better than no server. Of course many players will not be interested, but I can say from my personal experience that old server can be fun too. I recently started playing 1.5.2 alice pack through lan sessions and while I find decent amount of things rather annoying, it is still fun to play with some good old mods that got removed/replaced in newer versions.
Will the 1.4.7 server be a little more "permanent"? One thing that's always bugged me is that long term projects aren't really a thing on modded servers because it takes time to learn the different mods if you want to be completely efficient in getting materials and beyond that, the map resets every new Minecraft version. Just a question of interest.
Once you know the basics of the mods it becomes much easier and we usually keep the same core mods each reset. and Mojang's Major updates usually happen approx. once a year.
New version can mean rewritten code/variables and yeah, then you have to start over again.. But at least you can take the knowledge from a previous version to a next version
I have played from like 1.1(?) through to this version and I feel like 1.4.7 was my favourite. By that point I wasn't new to most of the mods, and while I somewhat agree with wolfenstein's post, I still think it's worth giving another try... Perhaps it will be successful - there is a reason tekkit classic exists.
I haven't been around for a while, but I used to play 1.4.7 a lot. It was the final version of SKCraft that I properly played, since later versions didn't work on my shitty integrated graphics. As of recently, I've gotten a new computer, and could probably play later packs, but I personally think that the 1.4.7 modpack was the most balanced.
There are some things about old versions that were great and missed even today - for WoW, it is the old talent system that many people want to get back (the new system is great but very different). For Alice, it's probably old GregTech and IC2, because they were the tech mods during the 1.4.7 days, everybody loved them and we will not get them back like they were because IC2 experimental is really fucked up. Of course we all put on our rose-tinted glasses when thinking about ye olde times, and we will soon see all the problems 1.4.7 had, or all the nice things 1.6 has and 1.4.7 didn't. Same goes for WoW. The class imbalance, crazy hard raid bosses that only top-of-the-line guilds can beat, needing items for fighting (hunter ammo and warlock soul shards...), and all the quality of life improvements that WoW has now would be sorely missed when playing old expansions. But I'd still rather play Wrath of the Lich King than not play at all because the newest expansion has become an unplayable mess. WotLK was fun in its own way, and the game's state back then was an integral part of it as well. So give me 1.4.7 and I can at least play with IC2 and GT for a time and say my farewells to them. Oh yeah, in 1.5 I was still able to play even with my bad internet, but the first 1.6 pack used so much bandwidth that I had to resort to mobile tethering... and then 1.6 Deux came and I just couldn't play at all, even with a HSPA mobile connection. Another reason for me to vote for 1.4.7. I could actually play on Alice.
About GT, i agree. It with each new version becomes more boring. A IC-exp, i liked. No loss in the wires, new voltages, gravichest, advansed miner.
