Let's be honest, Sk89q is busy, a lot. Alice has been down for a long while at this point. The only others with console access are either a) gone because they left. or B) Missing. So we as a community have several options. 1) We could, wait for AFK89q but a problem like this could happen again. 2) We could host our own server, while still using these forums etc. We want to stay the same community. I myself cannot pay for hosting, but we could set something up on patreon. 3) Give more people ssh(console) access to the server. Thoughts? StrawPoll since I forgot to add it to this thread(I'm not voting): http://strawpoll.me/3156027
I think the long-term solution would be to have more access to SSH, but in the short term I think we could probably band together and get like a Kimsufi server to host the server, as none of the servers I currently maintain are capable of running a Minecraft server with the amount of mods that Alice's pack has. (EDIT: I could technically use my old motherboard which is sat in a case downstairs with no CPU or RAM to run a server, if anyone would like to contribute an AM3/+ CPU and some DDR3 RAM)
If we host ourselves it would be most likely a Dedicated server at OVH. Or possibly a server at Digital Ocean. It would be best to stay with In the USA mabye Chicago or New York as those locations are the closest to most of the players (as far as I can tell). A lot of players are in The EU, the US, or Canada with one or two from Australia.
Well I have $100 of credit lying around in my Digital Ocean account that I've now remembered about...
Arg, I don't suggest that we get our own server, that might cause a lot of problems in the long run(We might end up having disputes with SKC mods and what not). I think an addition of moderators and and get someone to be our "Server Manager" would be the better path. P.S. We seriously need better server hardware, but I know for a fact that SK doesn't like this kind of stuff P.S.2 Arrrg I got no time Ill add more of my thoughts later
I can start it anytime, but it will just crash because alice is a hot mess. I have been testing new things in SP. I envision a world of water and customizable ships.
Purely out of curiosity, in which way is Alice crashing at the minute? Is it exception-ing out or is the JVM taking a shit like it usually does?
My guess is a combination and also mods that are badly coded. Java is great for smaller games but modded minecraft is a little on the extreme side on what is good for it.
well i dont really see hosting our own server as an solution that just seems like a work around. it might be an idea to have some one get access to the SSH that is trustworthy. Like Croxio said we would like to know what the error message is that you are getting this way we might be able to put our heads together and solve this quicker Alice is a fun world (mod) to play and even if there is a decision to host your own server then how would we maintain the mods and all :S
With regards to keeping the mods, mods jars are universal now so I can literally copy the mods folder from a client install for Alice into a server install. We would lose the server-side stuff though.
that is true but there still needs to be maintance in the way of updates and fixes or it just means you will be on 1.7 always feel free to correct me ofcourse
If worst does come to worst and that is the route we take I'd be quite happy to take on the responsibility for managing the mod pack. There's a first time for everything. Let us hope, though, that it does not come to that.
I just hope we can get some more info and seeing the way the strawpoll is taking the votes seems like there is no shortage to people who would like to help . I agree with you lets hope it doesnt come to that point -Memories are good and bad-
I don't see the problem. We manage mod packs the same way we do now. We can even keep the launcher. Following the poll though, new server is last resort.
I believe venvai was making reference to the handling of the transition between major Minecraft versions, like say 1.7.10 to 1.8, as that would likely involve the rebuilding of the modpack.
yes that was may main point. all we can do atm is wait for some info or solution of the current staff members.
Oh no I never implied it was a difficult thing to do if you have the time and patience, it's just that we need someone dedicated to managing it.
