The motherboard in the list is outdated/not in stock. What are some alternatives? Also would it be worth getting the Asus R9 280 for 220$ instead of the gtx 970? What should I upgrade if I do get the R9 280 instead?

I have a gtx770 and i'm quite happy with it. But I recall the 970 not being really much more expensive, so if you have the coin an there is stock, sure, go ahead.
The 970 is a great graphics card, good choice also i'd recommend getting a slightly bigger powersupply, atleast 500W if you can, aswell changing your memory to a dual-slot configuration to allow more bandwidth for your ram (instead of having 1x8GB module, get 2x4GB modules) you were talking about changing your motherboard in the comments, it's a bit more expensive but this one has great reviews, (try to find it in your country) http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=28693
I'm not sure why everyone thinks you need a massive PSU all the time. A 970 and i7 would most likely run on a 300w PSU.

If I were you I would rethink the whole thing. You will be disappointed with an AMD cpu without a doubt. You have a great GPU there and a shitty CPU seems a waste.

I'd go with something like an i5 4440 its only a little more than an i3. That way you get 4 physical cores opposed to 4 logical cores.
