Wasn't Bukkit the temp API place holder? This is even more confusing for me now, so where does MCP come into this? Are they hired by mojang too? lol
I don't think you should say trying yo buy bukkit was a doomed idea. That will just start an arguement on this Thread. There are two current points of view: Bukkit was never legal to begin with. Decompiling Minecraft was always against the EULA, mojang just allowed it. Now Mojang owns bukkit. Bukkit was licensed under GPL(I think it was that?) meaning all the devs technically own their code.
MCP is not an API. MCP takes the minecraft code and makes it readable for use humans. For example: Without mcp in order to make an explosion it could be "world.func_213521_e()" With MCP it is now "world.createexplosion()" Searge, the creator and leader of the MCP team was hired by mojang.
Wait a sec...then apparently Mojang only permits SP sided mods because of... Quite ridiculous since Minecraft has evolved into a mainly Multiplayer game, can we assume Forge is going to go down next? EDIT: After some, thoughts, I determined that the way that Bukkit distributed it's code was essentially its downfall. Unlike Forge, Bukkit actually distributes Mojang's material, which breaks the EULA.
I think people are a bit confused. What I was saying, was that buying Bukkit they way it was bought was doomed to failure. Nobody really owns all of Bukkit, only parts of it. Each individual contributor owns the code they contributed. Mojang couldn't really buy all of Bukkit, and doing this secret thing seems like it was just an attempt at an end-run around the license, but someone would have inevitably found out, and the resulting perception was practically preordained: the community saw it as a betrayal, both by Mojang and the devs they hired. Forge will probably be fine, and I doubt Mojang will try something like this again. MCP is a decompiling/deobfuscating tool, it doesn't actually distribute any of Mojang's code, so AFAIK they're legally in the clear.
Website ads(just to make sure, not like they implemented ads into FORGE API xD)?If so I assume bukkit makes money the same way? Derp?
Just website ads. There is nothing ingame. I'm not sure if Bukkit ever had ads though. (I use adblock )
Slightly off topic...but as others said "ads". By using adf.ly, whenever someone clicks the link - a certain amount of money goes to your account since the user has to watch an ad for 5 seconds, then continue to the real link. It's pretty much the ads are paying you to have people watch them - and even though the pay rate is ridiculously low, with Forge having potentially thousands upon thousands of downloads each day...it could be quite a significant payment amount.
Forge makes money off donations, adf.ly and website ads. I think there was another, but I don't remember.
They link to sk's post in their FAQ! EDIT: That's probably because SK is running the project alongside blood. On an unrelated note, I'm an idiot!
