If the portal is away from all the machines causing lag, perhaps not as many people (like me) would crash upon entering.
you need an extra option on the poll; "No, I have a decent PC" Personally I don't think it will fix the problem. As soon as you load the laggier chunks your game is likely to crash.
Enderpenguin: TP to spawn instead. I too crash just like you if I use the OB portal... so I just pearl to spawn and fly over.
I did edit your poll to be less biased and more useful... I think it's a worthwhile question to ask, but your poll did not ask it well.
I agree that this is a worthwhile question. I don't crash often, but occasionally. And no, it is not due to "decent PC". I have 32gb ram, haswell 4700 quadcore at 2.4 ghz, and geforce gtx 780m. 8gb dedicated to MC, and a permgen of 1024. I think that should be sufficient to qualify as "decent PC". Besides, I personally feel that noone has any business judging the quality of the machine someone uses unless they are willing to pay for the upgrade. Another option would be to reduce lag sources at OB, by either reducing or optimizing the builds.
I think moving the behind-the-scenes stuff farther away would be a good idea; if the machinery and generator were six chunks away (and chunkloaded), everyone at OB would benefit. They still cause frame lag even when it is out of sight underground.
Well...let's be honest here, I do crash while using the OpenBase portal, but apparently I'm the only one who ever works on OpenBase now - haven't seen Path or SoulExpression on recently. I've been using "high-tech" celestial gateways without crashing a single time as a substitute. Now that you finally mention the crashes being a large issue, I'll see what I can do to fix it.
Moving the portal wouldn't make any difference if you crash while teleporting there. Several Chunks all around the portal load on arrival so it would have to be a decent distance away, this would not be feasible for us that do not crash. I advise you build your own portal with a pathway to OB. Make the code similar and tell people that crash the code.
Its just as feasible for those that don't crash as those that do, honestly. It would be the same distance. People should not be punished in game for not having a $3000 computer.
Portals across chunk boundaries actually work just fine normally. I'll log in to take a look. Edit: I could not find the portal at all. So it's not broken; it's missing completely.
Well, I'm not sure about 'near the TC stuff', but I did find a huge portal north of the large wand charging station. I fixed it and set the OB code on it (it had no code set).
Had to use the OB machinery room's portal yesterday, not that it helped alot against the lag... There are like a chunk or 2 that are hard to load when I fly over from spawn, or go through the portal. Hard to know what chunk/s are causing it though...
You do realise why it is so close right? Unless I am online the chunks will not be loaded as the chunks loaders belong to me. I am not saying that you should be punished for having a toaster, I am merely stating that while some people crash others don't so why should the ones that don't crash have to walk half a mile because of people that crash?
