    my setup is
    motorola surfboard extreme sb6141
    linksys ea4500 (wifi off)

Linksys SE2500 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch
now remember this is at 10am so everbody is awake using all the street line bandwidth

We pay for 20 mb /s and get 2, don't you just love the ISP's spending their money on data harvesting services, instead of upgrading their decrepit routing system? Well in the UK at least. Oh yeah, as well as the constant bombardment of spoof packets to tie up the router. Oh and I nearly forgot the DNS poisoning. And we pay for that.

EDIT: many people misconceicve that coax can only carry around 50 mb/s max, and fibre is the way forward, fiber is nice, but coax can carry 200 mb/s, happily. But you know, 2 is cool.
Toma- proud hater of his ISP ( all ISP's ).

Kids these days. When I was your age it took longer for my modem to dial, handshake, and authenticate. But holy crap, upgrading to 56k was bliss after starting with a 14.4k modem. Don't even get me started on moving from a bunch of bbs's to gopher and www. There were literally thousands of web pages, and most of them only took 20 or 30 seconds to load.

Ugh, I can understand the hate for large corporations, but I just started working for a local WirelessISP as an Operations Manager, and not all ISPs are monopolies. I know it's not as fast as fiber but there are a lot of WISP's in the lower 48 that try to offer competitive pricing in rural areas where DSL and cable are trash.

    http://www.wispa.org/find-a-wisp

The company I am working for can deliver up to 25mbps with no data caps. The fastest DSL in the area is 10mbps but you have to live within a few miles of the main switch, most ppl only get 1-3megs in the surrounding area.

The big five cable companies are the worst. They were able to extend their regional monopolies from cable TV to cable internet service very effectively. If DSL technology had kept up with cable things might be different.

Maybe wireless providers will have better success, but I'm not convinced the technology is ready to compete with cable, particularly in urban areas where most of the customers are, but where interference is a big problem as well. It was like pulling teeth to get the FCC to open the small parts of the spectrum wireless ISP's have to work with now. If the ISP's are able to lobby for more spectrum, the future prospects for wireless internet providers would definitely improve.

You are correct. Interference is already an issue in my area, due to at least 5 other companies utilizing the 2.4ghz and 5ghz spectrum's. Long term, the only way to go is start laying fiber in the urban areas. But for rural deployments, it's much faster and cheaper to throw up a tower or lease someone's roof as a repeater. Laying fiber for just a few customers takes forever to get ROI.

Totally agree. There's a lot of spectrum locked down for government/military use too. Freeing up even a small part of that would do wonders.

Yes, we all remember those days, but it's in the past. Just because I had a cellphone the size of a cinderblock doesn't mean nobody can complain about their phone being slow or too big lol

But on the topic, I get about 9mbps download and +-1.5mbps up. It's kind of bad but I don't really care. It gets the job done. Problem is, I pay for 20mbps download.

Its not that I'm getting a useless speed, its that we pay for more than we ever get, which is false advertising..

Plus all cable in the UK is owned by one company, but the government were going to stop cartels ( unless they pay the right amount to the right person ).

Mobile phone service providers are the worst! I get'unlimited' internet on my.contract, they then cap this at 3GB 'fair usage' ( so they don't have to upgrade their servers), but I'm sure they 'accidentally double every packet to make me data last half as long, a 10 minute low quality YouTube video uses 200-500MB... </rant>

I'm pretty sure that all ISPs advertise their services as "UP TO" whatever speed you subscribed to. The ISP I work for has to do this because we cannot always guarantee speed due to unknown factors like interference and weather.

I'm not defending anything just pointing out that there is no way any ISP can guarantee the service 100% of the time.

Edit: I need to add that actual delivered service should be reasonable. If you have only been receiving less than half what you are paying for then yes there is a problem. But if you getting 80% for the last 2 days. And you called to let them know about it. Then they fix it. I'd say you got your money's worth.

    Edit2:sorry I'm venting too...

When you get a maximum of 9mbps download when paying for up to 25mbps, it is indeed a problem.
My ISP apparently can't do anything about it. I'd downgrade so that I'm not paying for something I'm not getting, but I'm guessing that would just cut it down to like 2mbps because of whatever issue they have getting a signal to my area.
    I just deal with it.

They never guarantee a minimum speed, unfortunately.

Ask if they can test the speed before changing your billing.

    Minimum speed is zero.

Business class service usually guarantees 99.99‰ uptime and speed/stability but they are very expensive.
