You can also access the troubleshoot menu mentioned in that post by searching for 'advanced' then selecting 'Change advanced startup options' on the search charm for Windows 8. If you can't find it that way, just dig around the settings app. It's in the same place where you can refresh/restore your PC within the app.

Do NOT do that. You will lose all your data.

Try getting your parents to remove Norton Family. That's probably the best. You shouldn't restrict your child's online possibilities anyway, instead you should teach them to be careful and which dangers to avoid. That'll work out much better.

And on a less serious note, explain to them that nobody should ever use Norton software at all. Also, you don't even need a paid antivirus as long as you don't visit 20 different porn sites daily. 'course some people say "better safe than sorry" and that's okay, but at least don't use Norton... use something good, like Kaspersky or GData.

ESET Nod32 is a very nice one, I highly recommend it. Non-intrusive, and has a gaming mode as well.

This is becoming difficult to read. Mind using some punctuation? :p

I have never used any parental control software (I'm not a father lol) and my mom never forced it on me either, so I'm not really knowledgeable about this, but I'd imagine that it's possible to make another windows user account which is unaffected by the parental control. Maybe you can get your parents to do that so you have unrestricted access to the PC.

Should look into that for my windows partition, though I'm rather happy with MS Security Essentials.

OT: I really think more parents should be like my mom. Instead of giving your kid restricted access to your PC, buy them a cheap used PC where it doesn't matter if they break the OS, show them how to handle it and that's it. They'll learn soon enough what they should and shouldn't do. And if they really want to see porn then no parental control will stop a teenager from doing so :D

If you don't have admin access to the PC, you cannot do anything about the software. You can only ask your parents to remove it for you (or give you the password for the program so you can do everything without uninstalling). Really sorry for you. :(

Hm? I thought Windows was still a piece of junk that doesn't even ask for a password if you want to (un)install software. Does Win 8 finally do that? I don't know about it because the Win 8 laptop I tested didn't have any password protection at all and I wasn't allowed to set one up... it would be great because this is the single biggest reason why computer viruses are even a threat.

Well, in that case you don't have real admin access, even if you have an admin account.

I do have administration and it's not windows asking it's the Norton account and the Norton credentials not the password for my windows user

If you need tech support's assistance removing a program, then it in itself is a virus IMO. Glad you got it figured out in the end.

On the topic of what suchtie was saying about Norton, only thing worse for your computer than Norton is McAfee. Both have a major impact on your system's performance and will slow it to a crawl.

That's true for most anti-virus programs. Even the particularly lightweight MS Security Essentials slow the PC down. Good thing I don't need them.

And I agree that you shouldn't need tech support to remove software. Granted, some users (most old people) barely know how to check their emails, but I don't think actor is technically handicapped :p
