Be weary though, Oracle likes to sneakily install strange toolbars. Make sure to remove the ticks from the checkboxes where necessary.

This is news to me... Otherwise I would have made mention of it. Guess using the JDK installer has it's advantages.

Yeah, there is no toolbar stuff in the JDK. Most people only use the JRE though. Personally I don't have any installer, I just type "sudo apt-get install openjdk" (or openjre) in a terminal and everything after that works automagically. :p

If you use OpenJRE for Minecraft you might want to have a read over this thread: http://skcraft.com/threads/world-tick-crash.2656/

I never had any issues with it and Minecraft. Also, Oracle's SunJRE is built from OpenJRE, so they're 99% exactly the same. My SKCraft client only crashed once anyways and that was on Windows... with SunJRE.

Still, since OpenJRE is being developed faster than SunJRE it sometimes contains a few more bugs - which, however, are also fixed quickly. Usually it's just as stable as Oracle's. And if I really had any crash problems I'd long have installed SunJRE.

My client doesn't crash though, I just get random superlag or End of Stream disconnects, and I believe it is either an issue with the SKCraft server or with my ISP, though the latter is more likely. Has become better already, I don't get disconnects as often as I did 3 days ago.

Ain't linux just great? :p I really like trying to get people to at least try it, but most won't even do that because it is not windows... even though they don't like windows either. They always forget that if you want something better than windows then it needs to be different from windows - nothing can be better while staying exactly the same.

I mean really, many things are so much easier... especially with the Ubuntu flavours. There aren't 1000 option menus, everything works out of the box and you mostly don't even need to install drivers, except the video card. And it's easy to use too. The only "advantage" windows has is that more people use it, and that's not a good thing. Crappily written, slow and ugly. If all my games worked with Wine then I'd long have wiped my windows partition to have more space for movies.

Oh god I wrote too much again. Well, what does it matter.

    yeah basically ^^
what i find funny is linux uses the x window system witch is around 30 years old STILL keeps up with windows graphics and even surpasses it in some instances cant wait for wayland ^^ if it is all its cracked up t be it will make linux's ability’s for graphics far superior on way less hardware then any windows (it all ready does but it wont be on a 30 or so year old graphics engine) (with ubuntu change to adding the mir stack(compatibility layer) it is suppose to be able to support more graphics cards natively with out the need to install proprietor divers but idk about that working so hot cus its jsut one more thing between the application and the hard ware but we will see( i use kubuntu so no mir stack for me on a daily base which could be a good thing)

@suchtie do you use vanilla ubuntu? or or a flavor if so how is the mir stack serving you

I pretty much only use a Linux VM for the CLI. Were it capable of running all the programs that I need it to without Wine I'd use it for my main OS. Running a dual boot system just makes things more complicated for me. I don't even have a proper backup system for my one OS yet.

I plan on downgrading my internal hard drive and using the 2TB inside as external storage. Then I have to buy a third drive to backup both drives. Which I can't afford. :/

I'm using Xubuntu because of the more lightweight XFCE. When I installed this I still had a rather bad PC so I didn't get KDE or vanilla Ubuntu for performance reasons. So no MIR for me.

I plan to keep it though, it's very fast but still simple and beautiful. I mean, look at this:
