Recently, there has been an ongoing conflict between GregoriusT, the creator of GregTech, and mDiyo, the creator of Tinkers' Construct. Basically what has been happening is Greg making more and more changes to vanilla recipes, mDiyo reverting some of them if Tinkers' Construct is installed, which in turn angers Greg. This has eventually resulted in Greg putting code in GregTech that simply makes the game crash if Tinkers' Construct is installed (an ItsNotMyFaultException). This can be classified as malicious code, if not flat out malware... Now of course, we don't want mods with malicious code in them in our modpack. (This particular code even makes the game unplayable.) If Greg doesn't do anything about this (which says a lot about his attitude against other modders and end users), we'll have to find a solution for this. Some of the things we can do are: - Completely remove GregTech from our pack. This would, however, also arguably make it too easy to reach endgame (though that is not the point of Minecraft if you ask me). - Stay with an older version of GregTech, until Greg gets rid of his malicious code. If he doesn't get rid of the code, we would have a problem when we update to 1.6, similar to the RedPower problem when updating to 1.5. We would also miss out on new features and bug fixes. We have even considered coding our own version of GregTech, with only the good and nice stuff in it. However this would take a while, as most of us still need to learn how to code with Minecraft Forge, if not Java itself :I I have created a poll here to see if GregTech is actually still wanted these days. Greg has been adding more and more changes to vanilla to make it more 'realistic' lately (just more tedious if you ask me), some of which are not even configurable. Even some of us who would always defend GregTech are now losing respect for Greg, as he is clearly going too far at this point. So what's your opinion on all this? Or do you have another solution to this problem? Please voice it below. Click here for the (unofficial) changelog of GregTech EDIT: Greg has disabled his crashing code, and TConstruct's disabling of GregTech's vanilla changes is now a config option. Crisis averted. Sorta.
It IS fixed in later version of TConstruct and greg commented it out in his code (might have been removed by now idk). But I think most of the modpack team know what route we're going to try and go. (it's a secret )
I love almost all parts of GregTech (90% of my base is GT stuff), but I think he has gone too far when it comes to changing vanilla aspects of the game, or overriding other mods such as Forestry. But the thing that really bothers me is that if another mod changes/reverts one of his "fixes" or what have you, he gets all mad and does something bad, i.e. Pumpkin of Shame or Force Crashing the game. Do other mod authors do that? No, they deal with it. It's a really annoying double standard. /rant
wow.... well i would love greg tech to stay thats where i voted for but looking at this greg tech owner is bieng the ***** about this so i rather would have tinker construct
I have to say that putting in malicious code in your mod is unacceptable, furthermore if you're going to unquestionably change other authors mods and set a double standard for yourself you have no business being in any mod pack. Maybe without GregTech people will move more towards more creative builds, or they'll leave which may not be such a bad thing in terms of TPS
I know I haven't been active these last months and probably wont be in the near future. I know this sounds crazy but I'm kinda tired of minecraft. That doesn't mean I have lost my love of helping people. If it comes to it I would be More than glad to help code a new version of G-tech. I am confident I have enough experience coding with forge (my friend and have been working on a mod off and on) to accomplish what is needed.
I already though Greg was (insert choice words here) that got off on peoples tears, And that his mod was needlessly complicated for no good reason, But after hearing he wrote malicious code against something as awesome as tinkers construct an awesome mod in its own right; I don't know that i like Greg or his dumb mod anymore. I don't really care what anyone decides to do with regards to the mod if it stays it stays it goes it goes; Just know that my opinion of Greg tech is tainted even more then ever now.
SKCraft - The Mod I like that notion. Maybe that's the way modding needs to go, rather than just having one person, or small groups putting out mods you have communities developing, and exchanging mods in their packs. I mean I hear a lot of differing opinions on what is OP just from the few times I have read chat, and on Team Speak, so why not build around the challenge the community is looking for? I guess the counter point is who codes it, and how?
Greg wrote that 'malicious code' because mDiyo forcibly disabled something something in GT that was already configurable(Which was 2 planks from 1 log), whenever TConstruct was installed; And greg took that as a personal attack and thus added that 'malicious code'. But it doesn't matter anymore, since it was already resolved days and version ago. I assure you, that won't be the name of the mod that us on the modpack team are making
I think GT is a good mod, but forcing others to play your and yours alone way is very childish. I think a lot of things he does, makes the game more balanced, however when you decide malicious code is alright to add to your mod, once anyone makes something happen that you don't like, and remember anytime you do something to your mod that overrides GT, greg takes it as a personal attack, it just goes to show that people will look for a better mod.
Greg never forced anyone to do anything, that's why people love his mod 'cause it's so configurable. But mDiyo made TConstruct doing it forcibly because he didn't like the idea of it taking people more time to get a few more logs to start his mod. And people won't look for a better mod, those who use it, will keep using it until they want to stop or want to switch to a better alternative.
"This can be classified as malicious code, if not flat out malware..." isn't that illegal? xD report this to minecraft forums and have them remove the mod from they're site.
