sk89q, i have a private server that i might make open to my friends eventually, but for that i will need a custom server ip address. I know that you have a good deal of server experience, so i just decided to ask how to make a custom server ip. Thanks! Also, is this in the wrong thread category...?
Are you talking about having a static IP address? If so, then you have to purchase one from your ISP. However, if you are okay with having a web address for your server, then you can use a free service like No-IP to assign a web address to your server.
Hmm, thanks. I'll probably look into that. If i figure out a (relatively) safe way to have a public server, it will be a whitelisted, invitation-only server. Maybe you'll get an invitation?
You do not need to pay to have a static IP address, you would, however, need to pay for a DNS(Unless you want to use the program above or a program similar sort where you would have people connect to servername.no-ip.info). If you do not want the DNS host's name to be in the IP people will connect to you will need to purchase one as no company(That I know of) will let you have one for free. A static IP address just means your IP address will remain the same whereas a dynamic IP address means that it will change every time you restart your computer.
One good thing to do protect the server is not giving out the IP UNTIL the subject is whitelisted/invited. Sure, if someone is targeting your server they can figure out the address quickly enough, but many hacking attempts are potshots, aimed towards any addresses that are publicly available.
