I think to help the server stress a little bit we can do 2 things that will compliment each other. First. Disable world anchors and only allow personal anchors. Second. 30 minute AFK kick. These two actions would reduce the stress on the server considerably in my opinion. Some people would be mad, but most would be happy because their personal anchors would actually work some, if not most, of the time. A player being afk to keep their base loaded keeps about 10x the chunks loaded that an anchor does, and I have been noticing recently more people sitting afk, or using alt accounts and both being afk to keep their bases and operations loaded. I see this as unfair, as it causes everybody else's anchors to simply not work at all. I also understand that gregtech has introduced a ton of stuff to make the game harder and take longer, so people need their bases loaded longer for processing to achieve the end effect. So as I see it there are two options. Make it better for the people that are actively playing on the server and not sitting afk, or reduce the difficulty of gregtech. I do not see the latter happening, so I am suggesting the former.
It is not necessarily better, but how it works is different. A personal anchor only works when the player that placed it is online, and it does not force load chunks, it only keeps chunks loaded once they are loaded. That way if a person has a bunch of anchors, he has to visit the ones he wants to be loaded, it will not load all of the anchors all of the time. Combined with the 30 min afk kick, it means that people cannot afk all day to keep their bases loaded, or afk with alt accounts, and with the personal anchors that also means that when they are kicked their anchors stop working as well.
While I do agree with the idea of only having the personal anchors work, I feel that having the kick after a certain amount of tie would make the server seem a lot like other servers. I personally Prefer world anchors to stay like this, so when they do stop working, you have to have an alt of some kind to load your chunks.
Yes, but not everyone has or can afford an alt. If there were to be a 30 min afk kick, then we could have some alternate form of keeping chunks loaded for players that ARE online. The personal anchor accomplishes this and anyone may use or make one, in my opinion, I think more people might want anchors than having afk'ers or alts to do things. Finally not only would gregtech have to be reduced, but also people would need bees to be able to produce in any environment without problem, ie tropical bees, and nearest jungle is a couple hundred away.
maybe you could make world anchors require EU, MJ or diamonds and make them eat it up faster. Or make aiparies load themselves ONLY
Impossible, unless you get CovertJaguar or Sengir to add it, sk will not do that sort of thing, And most likely he could not.
I don't modify mods unless the benefit is worth my time, which it rarely is. The reason why world anchors are not yet 'fixed' is because some people keep their bases loaded, and some people's bases are very heavy and I do not want them ever to stay loaded.
That's exactly why I think it would be best to have an alt opposed to world anchors being fixed. But as nolan said, it might be best to just disable world anchors, and have personal anchors fixed.
As far as I have heard SK has a bit of tweaking he is going to do for his scripts. From what I can tell he is going to make the TPS variable per chunk/chunkloader/claimed area, so the people that are using the most will get lower TPS and free up resources for the rest of the server. AFKing with alts in my opinion is rather horrible. I stayed up until about 5 am this morning, hoping for the server to perform well late at night. It did not get better until just after 4 am, when the server restarted. When the server restarted over half the server was AFK, and it was lagging, even for me. After it restarted only 12 of the 30 people logged back on, and all of the world anchors were working, with no lag. That means everyone who had a world anchor had their base loaded, and the server performance was not that bad at all.
Also AFKing with an alt just ups the server stress, since I've heard by default every player keeps 11x11 area at all times, whereas the World/Personal anchor only keeps 3x3 area loaded. I feel a solution to that would be a 15-20 min afk kick, seeing as that could reduce the stress quicker. For reference to the anchors however, these are the differences between the two, copied from Railcraft's Wiki. World Anchor Features Always active unless out of fuel or disabled with Redstone. Force loads chunks on world load. Personal Anchor Features Only active if the owner is currently logged into the Game. Does not force load chunks, only prevents already loaded chunks from unloading. Between the three viable options, I would feel personal anchors would be the best solution, as they ease the server stress and as people should know, less stress on the server, means a better overall experience for all.
11x11 (121 chunks) is the default. Sk probably lowered it. And in retrospect, the personal anchor idea will just make players want to AFK more. Now, you've got the chunks that your personal anchors keep loaded + (11x11) = more area that would be loaded if we went with the idea of personal anchors.
