Here's the regular status update on Alice: We use Bukkit for block logging, chest protection, whitelist, /invite, and a bunch of server things. We use Forge also, which is what a lot of these mods we use require. The last version of Bukkit combined with Forge, with adequate support for many of these mods (they have to be explicitly ported to this Bukkit and Forge combo) is still for MC 1.2.5. If we just use Forge, we can use much more up to date versions (MC 1.4.6). The serious downside is that you'd practically be playing vanilla Minecraft but with new blocks and items, and there would be no locked chests or anything like that (a problem!). Possible solutions: Move to Forge only, and port all the stuff that currently requires Bukkit. Stop new applications and only let very trustworthy people in, and switch to Forge only. Wait to see what will happen. Other even less desirable options. We've been doing #3 for months now, but the current plan is to consider #1 (and maybe even #2...).
The best for everyone is the solution 1. Also maybe the more complex, so I think only the really core features should stay: instead of porting everything, we could just port some of the things; like those ones: Chest locking, worldedit, chunk claim and block logging (and maybe worldguard, but mods could claim chunks containing important building so it could make a protection instead of directly porting worldguard).
From what I've see and experienced from a forge-only server, most the basic features have already been implemented like permissions, chunk claiming/block protection for players and area protection for staff. Some things you could substitute like maybe using mystcraft linking books instead of porting using enderpearls. And have the invite system out of game. But i do agree with chaeris about just porting the bare necessities and not all of the plugins because if we were to choose 1 it would probably still take some time to wait for everything to be ported.
For number 2, how would you become a trusted member? Also, can't you make a forge mod that chest protects?
Shadow, the problem if we don't port our chest locking system (for exemple) is that every chest locked right now will be unlocked and everyone will have access to it until you re-lock the chest! The same things for the claimed chunks!
Solution #1 is likely me porting WorldGuard to Forge, which has to happen anyway it seems, so it's inevitable.
However, chest locking wouldn't be available post-reset. Which means that any new loot you get in the freshly reset world wouldn't be safe. I'd be pretty nervous about storing a few chestfuls of ore blocks if I knew anybody could just walk up and empty it. Still, I consider 2 to be a pretty good option for the meanwhile. I'd recommend stopping new registrations completely for the meanwhile (I'm sure there's plenty enough of bad apples that we'd have to weed out from our current community once things like chest protection get taken off), but that's just my opinion. sk's just said he's going on to option 1 (kudos to you for the extra effort, sk), so we'll be getting all those features back eventually anyway.
So i'm guessing NO ONE has read my posts about chunk claiming mods if we were to reset, I bet no one even my this thread I made about suggesting a vanilla server. Bottom line is that THERE ARE mods out there to add chunk claiming a chest locking, the only problem would be that if/when worldguard and the chestlocking plugin was ported, if sk were to switch plugins, we would have to redo all the locks. that's all really. But yeah, I would agree on #2 also, I think the only problem would be weeding people out that you found "trust worthy"
I think that's a great idea! I wouln't mind redoing all my locks only if we would be warned a couple of days before the switch to bukkit
As Shadow has said, there are Forge mods available that allow chunk protection. Nothing as good as the Bukkit mods offered, but functional. There have been public Forge servers running 1.4.x for quite some time now. It's time for the much anticipated reset.
Yeah, the fact of the matter is that this is one of the top modded servers, but the reason why it hasn't updated is due to trivial matters that can be done at anytime so long as there is the basics to run the server with minimal issues. Because chae, sk wants to have everything ready before the server updates.
Because we have issues as it is with some members of the community griefing, etc. With less tools at our disposal it makes the task that much more difficult.
How would "trustworthy" be determined? Would everyone currently white listed be allowed in or would their be some sort of restriction? I can see several problems either way, but I cannot think of any fair restriction. Any effective measure that I can think of would eliminate either myself or at least one of the people that I know to be trustworthy from my real life. I am in support of option 2 and would like to see it implemented as soon as possible. I would rather start with an unprotected server now and get protection later than wait any more time.
If we do it like when Alice was being unveiled, members who have been approved through traditional means can apply in a thread and groups of new members will be added in small waves. Potential problems can be weeded out individually if needed.
Well that wouldn't be an issue if you actually encouraged people to claim their chunks. The server I played on had surprisingly minimal griefing issues because the players actually claimed their chunks.
