My launcher is getting the error:
Failed to fetch news: connect: Address is invalid on local machine, or port is not valid on remote machine
...on the news, and a similar error when trying to log on.

I have the latest Java, its only happening since I got Windows 8.

I meant it wasn't blocking the game launcher.

Is there a little chance that it's related to the equivalent of "User Accout Control" on Windows 8?

I still can't get this working, it does the same with the Feed the Beast launcher and the original Minecraft launcher, although by redownloading the original Minecraft launcher it started working, that did not work with this.

Infact, the feed the beast launcher spams the error a lot. The 'address is invalid on local machine, or port is not valid on remote machine' is the same from minecraft and skcraft launcher.
    Code:
connect: Address is invalid on local machine, or port is not valid on remote machine: java.net.ConnectException: connect: Address is invalid on local machine, or port is not valid on remote machine

Then it has to be something with your internet or something, because I have not had an issue with any of those things.

There's a reason it wasn't a good idea not to go with windows 8 just yet.

I tried to get this working again recently, turns out that it is not infact Windows 8, but is Kaspersky Internet Security, I haven't found a fix yet.

Have you added the launcher to the Kaspersky white-list, allowed list, exclusion list or something?

Fixed it by making a new rule in kaspersky.

    Steps
    1. Go to kaspersky firewall list
    2. Make it only show network applications.
    3. Find the 2 java ones.
    4. Allow every network thing.
    5. Make kaspersky stop monitoring the traffic.
    6. $$$
