Here's the status on the servers: Where's Vincent 1.4? We depend on a server modification called Bukkit, but it's moving kind of slowly and it's not quite ready for MC 1.4. However, I'm going to test it this weekend to see whether it is in a reasonably working condition so that we can update. Worst case scenario is that everything breaks, but we'll see! Where's Alice 1.4 (or 1.3)? Unfortunately, it appears that the Bukkit+Forge combination that we use is mostly likely a dead endeavor. Forge is required to most of the addons that we use, and Bukkit is required for a few addons, and all our important server administrative functions. From this point on, to make Alice what Alice is, we would have to switch fully to Forge, but that is complicated by the fact that the important bits we rely on reside only in Bukkit space. Fortunately, most of those important bits are mine, and I've discussed a few things with a Forge developer and there's some eventual plans that should allow us to move over, eventually. Everything's kind of still up the air, and not all the mods we use are even available for 1.4 (or even 1.3), so even if we could switch tomorrow, we'd have to drop some of the big mods that you currently use (and also forego any reasonable protection from annoying people).
What i'm wondering is, as a person who doesn't dabble in bukkit plugin "creation" is it harder to make a plugin or a minecraft mod?. None-the-less, its a shame about bukkit, but if it came to stuff like commands and what-not (I know it won't) I would just suggest this.
I'm really looking forward to Vincent 1.4.2. There's so much new with 1.4.2, it should make vanilla fun for a bit. According to Mojang 1.4.3 will likely be released next Wednesday. Mostly a bug release though, so it should not be as big a deal for the Bukkit folks. The MCPC news is a bit bleak, but with all the changes to the game from Mojang it's not a huge surprise that things are in flux. It will be interesting to see what happens next. Perhaps we'll see new forge hooks that will make server administration easier without Bukkit, or maybe even make it possible to port plugins from Bukkit to Forge?
[Vincent] Ok. [Alice] We could switch over to forge only just like the server ForgeCraft (@direwolf20 plays it). They use a lot of awesome mods that I think we should use, too. Industrialcraft, Buildcraft, Forestry, IC Addons, BC Addons, etc., etc.!
What if we just made alice creative while we wait for their decisions? It could be easier to get everyone knowing about everything on alice! Just like a creative-test server... Or maybe something where we could have for example the mining world creatived....
It's actually already possible to do this, but not many people have taken advantage of it. The only one I know of currently is Dynmap.
BUKKIT 1.4 IS OUT!!!! It doesn't mean Vincent 1.4 will happen tomorrow or whatever, now we'll need to wait for sk89q to check for no bugs, nothing.... I have no news about Bukkit+Forge 1.4 as I'm not really interested in that... >>here<< is the link for official STABLE bukkit release for 1.4 PS: yes, sometimes I waste like 2 minutes to check latest bukkit releases on their official repository...
Actually, that is only a beta, which means bukkit is technically not out for 1.4, it's just a very buggy beta
I have a server with this version of bukkit... Bug reports: - Problems with some databases (sqlite and MySQL especially) - Problems with the WorldEdit craftscripts (actually more likely with rhino) The biggest problem is the one with the databases, because that blocks the use of anti griefing plugins, I use a grief logger, but it takes a while to know who made what, and I can't backup... I will make more tests of more bukkit versions, and I'll tell you what's going on on this thread!
There's alot of mods for Forge-only servers primarily for server administration. The only thing you'd miss with the current mods out is all the bells'n'whistles like mappads, random chat colors, and the chunk claiming system. Examples: ReiFNSK's Login Message Mod (colored motd, online player list on motd, etc.) SimpleBackup (more mods by the author) Essentials substitute But honestly, I've been wanting this to happen. Now, mod/plugin authors can focus more on Forge and on the vanilla servers and maybe have the mods/plugins do more if they have a client-side as well (like Spout but better!). And i'd love to see what sk makes for the server!
I really don't have a problem with Alice not updating for a while, but where does this put the building competition?
Yeah that was way back in August. Assuming sk isn't busy as usual he could get around to it (or another appointed staff member).
If I knew that Alice would have take that amount of time to update, I would probably have built my new HighLands since a long time ... Really need to rebuild them
I'm starting to think that we need to form a Dev team just for our servers so we don't have issues like this waiting on others to update or the dev working on one of the mods we use stopping and not updating. I don't know if we can just take and update/modify the mods we use without permission or not or if it would just be better to start from scratch but at this rate it might be worth looking into since I know our servers have a few good modders/coders and tons of other people who would be willing to give up some free time to help out and keep our servers the way we like them, both Alice and Vincent even though Vincent is most likely much easier to keep going. I can only speak for myself on this but it's been so long since I've been on Vincent or Alice that it's not funny, I get on every so often to look around and see whats up or if it's finally reset but jump right off since it hasn't. I'm betting there are more older members that are doing the same and thats hurting the server all around since only new people are using it and people have to go farther and farther from spawn to build things of thier own or find the resources they need to get going. If we can't update here soon we need to at least reset the world so the rest of us have something to do again and a few mods were added late so not every one got to play with all the new plants and stuff. I love playing on Alice but lately I've only been playing Solo or basic MC on another friends server and from time to time Technic so hopefully something happens soon on the SK servers.
I definitely agree with Cain about the idea of a dev team instead of waiting a long time for mods to update. But I'm pretty sure it would be okay to update the mods without permission just so long as its kept a (semi-)closed community and not just handing it out to anyone. Just like what happened with slowpoke101 and the smp ftb pack Gk made, as soon as it was moved to the downloads everything was fine (although devs might take it a bit farther). But as far as i goes with older members, even if I don't really count as an older member I think IMO, that its getting to the point where I wouldn't really want to login to alice even if i did finish my computer because there is not anything else to do and all the new people joining just doesn't! make it enjoyable to play . And I think it would be at the point where a world reset wouldn't really cut it if there was going to be another reset along the way, unless a lot of different/new mods were added just to play with until the real reset. IMHO it would get to the point where it might be best to have a separate world/server for older members or people that admins or mods "deemed worthy" to join, just! to for people to keep playing on it even when a reset was looming. Buuuuut thats just me.
