So as per a conversation last night in-game it's been mentioned that Deep Storage Units, a storage block added in the new Minefactory Reloaded version will be disabled in the upcoming update. Before jumping down my throat about how damn OP this storage unit is let me point out a few things about why they're simply a great alternative to barrels and quantum chests.

First, the default texture looks nice. It fits nicely in those high tech/modern looking builds. The other two storage mediums fit firmly in comparable themes. Preferences, preferences.
Second, the cheap recipe can be made expensive. This is a better alternative than simply disabling it. The recipe that crafts a stack of four should only craft one unit. That would at least put it more on par with the highest tier barrel; replace the center ender pearl with an expensive item.

Third, Flexibility. The DSU gui provides a way to customize input and output faces of the unit. Meaning if you have a complex transport network you can easily set where items can come in and where they can be pumped out.

Fourth, when a DSU breaks it doesn't drop its contents. Unlike some other storage mediums (barrels, bee indexer, etc...) you're not going to get that massive lag spike from a whole bunch of new items/stacks laying around when one is broken. Yea, nobody likes lag. Quantum chests on the other hand (while I didn't test this on the server) when broken/wrenched only give you a stack of the item you had stored in return, losing the rest. Yea, nobody likes losing stuff like that.

Wrapping up, I don't see any benefit to disabling the storage blocks unless there are serious issues with it (like dupe glitches, stability & lag, etc...) that cannot be fixed. The unit can be brought up to par with other storage methods with a recipe change. All in all it is a nice block and I think people would appreciate it's flexibility.

Okay, so I won't jump down your throat to say how OP it is, but I will accurately give the reasons against your argument.

    1. I have noting to argue against this, because I do like the texture and hate the ones that the Barrels mod adds.

    2. This cannot be done easily. Even is sk did it changed it himself, I don know how easy it would be to modify an existing recipe. But other things have been considered, like setting up an NPC shop to convert a Quantum Chest to a DSUand vice verse. I say quantum chest, because the highest tier barrel doesn't even come near to how much a DSU stores. Since a DSU can store upwards of 2 billion items, the highest tier of barrel can only hold about 262,000 items. Thus, it wouldn't make the conversion from quantum barrel to DSU very fair so to speak.

    3. TheBarrelsMod adds the same flexibility for customizing the input and output sides. And while it is not in the in-game GUI, it is in the config; Which I or any other modpack team member can modify if needed. Granted, it's still not as good as the DSU's.

    4. I really cannot argue against this. Since all the barrels drop all their inventory upon breakage, it really is a deciding factor to be used; But again, it really just depends on the crafting recipe or whether we decide to make it buy-able. So until we can talk to sk about what can be done; The DSUs will continue to be disabled.

The barrels in the new mod aren't as terrible looking as the factorization barrels though :p

I'm not sure the barrel mod sports the same flexibility, as I doubt you can set the config on a per unit basis on user demand. While you can edit the barrel config to suit your preference, that setting affects all barrels.

Stocking a highly obtainable item like cobble is something people do quite early on, and throughout the game. The barrel mod certainly works great at the start, but lacks as a solid solution mid-game. Basically the only thing I see as a reason to the disable it is because a cheap recipe but even with a recipe change its hardly worth the same as a quantum chest (you can't convert a DSU to a Liquid DSU, for example i.e. quantum tank).

Now I haven't had the opportunity to look, but what is the recipe for the DSU when GregTech recipes are enabled in the MFR config (there are three I think get generated at the bottom of the .cfg vanilla, TE, and GT)? If anything the GT recipe mode would make all of MFR harder to craft, though I'm not familiar with what changes are made.

    1. Disable recipe with whatever we use to disable recipes.
    2. Add new recipe with sk's Rebar plugin.

    Seems easy enough to me.

Well, I meant more for waiting for sk to actually get to adding it .-.

I say either a conversion NPC or a more complex(expensieve) crafting recipie that only gives you 1 dsu.

Most likely in 1.5 we'll have a mod to allow us to change crafting recipes, allowing us to make sure only 1 is crafted. But in the mean time, there is a shop for converting 1 quantum chest to a DeepStorageUnit in the same shop that housed the fusion coil refunding just opposite the arcade.
