Had the same problem today. Simple solution - disconnect and re-log in. :-) And avoid 'diagonal' boat trips. :) Seems to be okay N-S or E-W.
I find - whenever the quests book is going goofy, to simply drop the items and pick it up. That usually works for me. :-)
