I've been recently considering setting up a public war or roleplay server where there would be few rules, with most of the restrictions being powered by code (computers > humans, bwahaha). Beyond that though, I haven't spent time brainstorming too much. Anyone got any 'grand schemes' of how this could be done? In a way that is both fun and easy for us to manage.

Have you considered a factions server?

Hmmm, public war server... I have some ideas for something like that. Start a conversation with me on the forums if you're interested in my ideas and I'll reply ASAP.

huh Rp or public war server. . .if your making a war server will it be a (semi-)vanillia bukkit server or a modded server like alice with like some weapons mods installed?

But if its a Rp server you choose to create I'd love to help write the lore for the server.

I've been dreaming of a hunger games-type server. It'd be so cool if we made a field every week or so, then had like 10 people battle it out while others spectated.

Get flan's mods for that server. It comes with like WWII guns and planes and vehicles and stuff for war. It's awesome! I don't know if those mods are smp still thou because he rewrote it but if it isn't, consider sdk's mods which offer guns, and parachutes, and scuba diver suits, and an ATV! I also have a bunch more ideas that doesn't have to do with mods but just ideas for spawns and stuff for both servers. I can't really explain it over typing but if you can get on mumble i will be happy to explain my 'grand scheme'

im thinking it would be fun to play as zombies during a zombie invasion... and vice versa... if you die you become a zombie trying to take out the survivors until there is only one left. limit the weapons for the zombies, and the blocks they can break... and set them to respawn like 30sec's - 1min after dying... bonus points for the ability to summon spiders/creepers/skellys etc in crafting? (probably too much work for a mod, but thought id suggest it)

This idea came up for consideration here http://skcraft.com/threads/creating-a-kingdom.472/#post-3793

And I presented an idea there.

Without retyping the entire thing, I'll give a few pointers for how I'd manage it. I will specify if the idea pertains to JUST roleplay, JUST war or JUST both. If asked, I will draft more details for any of these. Again, a large and convoluted version of this is linked above.

    a. (both) 1 to 5 player-created/admin created cities, 100% grief-protected once constructed. (Public housing provided for people who don't join early on.)
    b. (roleplay) separate rules and laws for the cities, as well as the possibility of different base currencies.
    c. (both) Very large gap of space between cities. This is a war zone. Outlined with signs and obsidian, anything inside here is killable or griefable.
    d. Biome Treaty Redraft - Title stolen from the Creating A Kingdom thread. Basically a set of laws that are universal and cannot be violated by anyone.

    TO BE CONSIDERED:
    a. Invulnerability outside war zone.
    b. Staged battles, i.e. all sides given approximately 2 hours to build a fort or bunker and a set amount of time for the other side to invade it [inside the war zone]
    c. Not having a set war zone would make a more dynamic war, but would also cause the vast majority of houses to be built underground to prevent catastrophic griefs. To this end, you'd have to decide if more chaos = more fun, or a rigid set of war laws is required.

    d. A starting spawn zone that cannot be left by the player until they have read a set of rules and answered questions correctly. Possibly make this an impenetrable prison beneath one of the cities.

RESTRICTIONS POSSIBLY TO BE IMPOSED BY CODE:
(Having no talent with computers, I only assume this is doable.)
    a. Setting land as being largely non-griefable around the main cities, but entirely griefable within war chunks.
    b. pvp disabled outside of the war zone chunks.

To cut 99% of the BS from this post, go to the part labeled HELLO.

Adapting this idea to Alice would be a rewarding challenge. The island setup and vast oceans make for interesting scenarios. The rules would remain the same, with tight pvp restrictions and huge griefing restrictions. Seems to be the only way to carry it through without ME LOSING 1000 COPPER CABLES!?! O_< RAGE!

As with my vincent idea, we'd simply keep the "war" completely out of the spawn lands.

If given creative powers, our ability to artificially create the "war lands" (War zone + Cities) would be big.

If not given creative powers, our ability to artificially create the "war lands." Basically lies in the hands of the rich and famous.

o.o Personally, when I got a vast amount of resources and full quantum, I was thinking about going to a vast area of ocean I discovered and beginning the creation of an underwater and/or sky city. I even joked about recreating a giant (horizontal) halo ring above a part of the ocean. (Had to be hundreds of chunks of barren water. o.o I just pictured a self-sustaining ring world above it...nothing wrong with that.)

    HELLO :D --

I think Alice with its vast oceans would actually create a good war zone. Picture this:
Two large cities staged on natural or artificial islands. In between them, a large ocean. On that ocean, an island (natural or artificial) dedicated to the pvp aspect. (This island could also be upgraded to be an arena/hostile crossroads type thing, or if you're into the whole urban combat thing, we make a third "contested" city that cannot be griefed and has no government/player base, but where pvp is allowed. It'd be interesting to see people jetpacking over city walls and slicing down on someone. haha.

Oh...and...it's reasonable to say: If you don't want to lose your quantum...do not bring it to the war zone. o.o'

Anywho...my current Alice project is creating a giant room that happens to be under the ocean and using it for solar power...after that, I'd be happy to begin devoting time and resources to the creation of this...thing...dependent upon if we'll adapt it to the existing servers or dedicate a whole new server to it. Given that we're already spread on two servers with the majority of people on Alice, we may consider just adapting it to existing servers.

I may suggest a Hardcore PVP/PVE Death=1hour-ban no-life-regen roleplay (with alice' mods) factions server where people are allowed to kill and destroy anything but cities. Player can create guilds (factions) which can, once they have enough player and money (which they earn through quests in main town/mining?) create cities. Those are griefer-proof, just guildmembers can build in it.If they want a war, they have to declare a war with a command. The other party will have to agree with it to start the war at the next day. Wars start always at a certain time of the day, for example 24:00 MET, so both factions know when it will start before they declare a war. War time means: Towns are vulnerable, everything can be griefed, destroyed, locks don't work anymore and everyone is free to kill. With the 1 hour ban, war will soon be over and the winner can take all the loot they find out of the enemies city. Be aware that people will be more powerful than vanilla guys because of the RPG mod.

Just my thoughts, do what you want :)

The idea of a short death ban/official war code is pretty awesome, the only big fear I have is the grieftacular things that can and will happen to towns and inventories kept in chests...So again it does come down to the decision of chaos versus structured.

Mad's idea provides a mix of both chaos and structure, so if people agree that that would be a fun challenge, we could do it.

The main issue is the defeated side's city getting grief-r@aped by winners of a war.

Instead of whole cities you could build outposts...

All of these are good ideas, but an hour seems a bit long, if I had to wait an hour every time I died, I probably wouldn't play.
