Accounts recently compromised

my account password was changed recently (i securely changed it to something new) im not sure it was a mod, as i don't do many mods... (hd-texture mod/optifine and rei's mini map and thats about it) and am careful to use trusted sources for those mods (minecraftforms.net and download directly from the authors links). Im not sure how it could have been stolen, is it still possible for a server operator to obtain the user's password or possibly their account credentials? I haven't joined many servers, but the breach happened the morning after playing on a private server hosted by a player.

 

yeah, this deff was not brute force. They had to have had my password or some form of credential that let them change my password (they did not have access to my email). I use the same password standard (not the same password) i use for my military credentials. It is uncommon, in no word dictionary i have ever seen, contains a good mix of all characters (upper lower numbers symbols) and changes frequently and is not based on any actual word(s) of phrase(s).

edit: and i realize that the XKCD comic you posted is an example of this, however the concept the comic refers to has been refuted by many reputable sources (forget links - but can research if you dont believe me)

Bad People do bad things. The internet is a place full of baddies. Make sure you keep your information safe.
That beeing said, never ever use any mods their creators you dont trust. For Instance, an mod from Eloraam or Alblaka or sk89q, which all of them are very trusted and have a high amount of downloads, will be extremly unlikely to contain a virus, while a 1-thing mod from an unknown author will be more likely to contain such.

Sometimes it's just because you can. To test your own skills or to piss people off.

 

WHY AM I BANNED?????????

 

You were banned because your account was among the list of compromised accounts, until that is resolved, to prevent someone else using your account to grief the server etc, its been banned, once you have secured your account, message SK and you will be unbanned.

 

My name isnt on that list but access is still suspended. Could anyone shed some light on what happened?

 

same thing that david got i got: my access is suspended, and i dont know why. someone please tell us what happened?

ok so what happened is when i made myself a portal to the nether, it sent me into a portal that had locked doors on either side. so i tried to go back through the portal and it sent me to another portal with the same locks. after screwing around with this for about 20 minutes i ended up in a cave where i made my way out of and returned to my house. if i accidentaly stole a few blocks i had to destroy i will pay them back in double. i dont know what happened but the portals wouldnt send me back to the portal i made beneath my house.i did break the portal i ended up in at one point just to get out of it. and made a different portal right outside the tunnel to see if it would fix the problem. i was just trying to return to my house. sorry for any inconvenience i caused.

 

Wow...Mods banning just cause of a single grief? are we finding the smallest reasons to ban people ? without even giving them a chance to explain themselves first.

 

Do you want griefer on this server? I don't. It isn't that hard to "not destroy other buildings".

 

Obviously i don't want griefers on the server. BUT i dislike the fact that people get banned on the slightest sign of grief. If it were sk, he would atleast give a warning or wait till the accused gets online to hear an explanation. Just my thoughts.
