Shoo, Windows krill! Begone! To the trash with that commercial, spying pile of junk!

Hey, if we have GNU/Linux, can we call that... thing NSA/Windows? Would be fitting by now.

    Linux F.A.Q.

    Q. Why should I use Linux?
    A. If you are extremely concerned about OSS/FOSS and/or security, and if you want needless complexity

    Q. Why shouldn't I use Linux?
    A. Any other reason.

Of course. Kill fire with fire. :p

By now almost everyone knows that Linux is better than Windows when it comes to stability, performance and security. Most people are just afraid of change, or too lazy to even try Ubuntu from a live USB. They're happy in their Windows bubble, and that used to be okay.

But due to the spying stuff, which is not only in Win 10 but has also been in Win 7 and 8 recently, more people are becoming interested. People are slowly realizing that the old "I have nothing to hide" argument is very much invalid. You want other people to know your credit card number? Bank account info? Porn watching habits and fetishes? Do you want your government to know in full detail your entire browsing history, and everything you ever wrote or uploaded on the internet? Everyone has some information on their PC which they wouldn't share with anyone, sometimes not even their family or significant other... or especially not them. You're not anonymous if you're using Windows. Not since Win XP.

And it's not only the security. On Win 7 and 8, all necessary files for an upgrade to Win 10 are secretly downloaded into a hidden folder without your consent, clogging bandwidth for no apparent reason. Great fun especially for people in rural areas or less developed countries, where low bandwidths and metered connections with traffic caps are common. You have a 50 GB cap and Windows downloads 15 GB without your consent? Tough luck. And when it's done it starts pestering you about upgrading.

Then come the ads. You have paid for an operating system, no small amount, and it still contains ads. Guess why M$ want everyone to use Win 10.

The only redeeming feature of Windows left is that it "just works". But Linux distros like Ubuntu or OpenSuse also "just work". It would be perfect for your grandma who just needs her e-mail and facebook, or your dad who maybe writes a letter once in a while. A friend of mine put Ubuntu on his mom's PC and she loves it, because it's so easy to use.

    ...

Yeah I like ranting on the internet. Deal with it.

Perhaps the thread should be locked, lest I write more rants.

Says the person who has probably never used Linux.
Go try installing Ubuntu. Go on.

I wouldn't install it immediately, testing it with a live USB would be enough. You can still install software and fiddle with it, and since you're only using live mode nothing you do will be saved so it's okay if stuff breaks.

But Ubuntu is a good start. Literally easier to use than Windows, very intuitive. I personally don't like it but I still recommend it to everyone who never used Linux since it's so simple.

Ubuntu is like the first major mistake you can do when trying out Linux, that's the sheer, primary example of Non-free Free software. If you're going to use Ubuntu, you might as well stay on Windows.

    Ubuntu isn't simple, Gnome is.

Fedora is a little more Windows friendly as it comes with Cinnamon, a Windows-like window manager, I consider Fedora to be the best beginner's distribution.

Well if you're going the "it has to look like Windows" route then use Zorin OS, its desktop is made for Windows users and has presets to make it look similar to Win 95, XP, or 7. If you want as little change as possible then this is for you.

But as long as the UI is intuitive and simple a Windows user will get used to it quickly. It doesn't have to look like Windows. People got used to Android or iPhone UIs as well, why wouldn't they get used to a simple desktop like Ubuntu's Unity?

GNOME would be even worse than Unity, the frequent hot corner usage is difficult to adapt to.

And about non-free software: do you think the average Windows user cares about that? It's great to use FLOSS*, of course, but remember the target user group. If they'd like to use FLOSS more, then sure, Fedora is a good choice. Cinnamon is a nice desktop as well; if I didn't use i3 already I'd probably use Cinnamon. But for the average Windows user Ubuntu is alright.

lol, the noob fest. Arch, Gentoo or go home.

But seriously, the more you learn about linux, the more you realize, it doesn't matter what distro you use. All that changes are the package managers, program managers, and config locations. You can change all of them anyway.

I know I kinda started it but this is a thread to get Fuzzy's situation fixed so if we can steer it back on track that would be lovely.

Lol! I actually haven't had time to even log into that particular box since posting this. I'll get back to it soon though.

Personally, I've used windows nearly exclusively since Win95 with only slight dabbling in Linux for hosting my gameservers/websites. The release of Windows 10 is what has finally pushed me away and I plan to familiarize myself with as many Linux distros as possible.
