Do something interesting for a change. If it doesn't work out you can just go back to plain-jane style. I feel like the majority of the veteran playerbase has grown bored with the repeating nature of Alice. Give them something to make this experience/incarnation truly unique.
Well we're not looking for PVP gameplay, just 2 different civilisations. Personally I'd love it but I don't know about other people.
I don't really like PVP because usually the guy who has less lag wins.. EDIT: or maybe i just suck at PVP :/
Yeah I always thought classic pvp was the weakest part of Mc but I like the 2 civilizations building contest though.
I don't much care for PvP either - but I don't think we should entirely discredit it as a possibility because of the fact that it's so easy to make both possible with minor compromise. Perhaps there's only certain areas (with incentive) where you can PvP? Such as a resource rich quadrant of the map or realm within the server. With community scenario based gameplay there's a ton of ways in which we could make PvP fit into the game without affecting those who don't wish to partake in it, and perhaps even create reason for the PvPer's and the PvEer's to interact (through trade or something).
Scenario's can range from just about anything, including the "skyworld" that was mentioned before, a world entirely underground, a world surrounded by a massive wall, a world with two (or more) major kingdoms, the list goes on. Having a community objective within this scenario creates group interaction and whatnot. Posing limiting factors that encourage community play and/or make the game more challenging tend to increase the long term enjoyment factor of those who tend to stay on the server for more than a few days at a time. Possibilities include food being very hard to come by, trees being hard to come by and only dropping one sapling, dangerous regions, dangerous mobs, and so on.
tiffykoros you drawn well the general idea that everyone suggested here and here <snip> Common pitfall "rare stuff" : tireless grindy players will have alot of rare items in the long run "distant/far" : well, once the ender-thing kicks in, anyone can teleport anywhere. "hard limit" : usually frustrating, unless well explained... every time a newbie ask "whyyyy??" ^^ Reading the latest comments makes me think of something like continent : 4 quadran having only says... +/+ y=255 moutains, +/- islandless ocean, -/+ giant desert with unkillable mob (have to trap them) and -/- void+skyland (poor modpackteam, good luck tweaking biomegen ^^) After that, one goal would be creating a metropolis spawn of safety... not sure yet.
by the way, just to clarify, I don't want PVP, I just thought people might suggest it. I quite like that idea, it would help make players work together.
I've been saying stuff like this for years on this server. http://skcraft.com/threads/mod-pack-idea.3847/page-2#post-34711 http://skcraft.com/threads/alice-1-6s-rebalancing.2981/page-3#post-27464 http://skcraft.com/threads/the-diamond-throne-a-battle-of-ores-and-ingots.2771/ (Really fun one) http://skcraft.com/threads/new-vincent.938/page-2#post-8339
You can't force a playstyle onto the community. We would all like people to work together and what not but there is people that simply do not work in a group...
Which is why you design scenario's that allow for isolationists to still enjoy themselves. Take a look at what you said anyway: Technically any mode we chose is forcing a playstyle onto the community. Exactly. There's an overwhelming majority of people that are looking for something new and exciting out of Alice. Compromise is a thing, and the compromises needed to appeal to people that don't wish to partake should be relatively easy to implement. We can't appeal to everyone. It's not a black and white world where we can't have one and the other coexist on the same map. If anything this entire thing is fixed by just creating a normal gen world (similar to a mining world) portal inside the spawn. People who don't want to partake can just go through that and play as if nothing has changed. The difference is, and the reason why we need mod support on this kind of thing: Most of the parties that don't wish to partake can have very simply compromises implemented to allow their gameplay to go unaffected. The people that are actually looking for something new and exciting and community based will simply fall apart shortly after they start trying to make whatever it is they're doing work in a server that offers no direct support for their cause. All I'm really saying here is take a chance and try something new and exciting for a change. If it doesn't work out it shouldn't be that hard to just go back to the way things have generally been.
I'll vote as fan of the competing civs idea. I don't know mechanically how that would work; balanced, minecraft? It's less likely than you think. But it is still a fresh new idea, and one I've always wondered about. Even if it flops, it would be exciting, and a hilarious learning experience about what we (at least, everyone who doesn't fly out solomode) want from the game.
We've been compiling mods and I am tempted to focus on an adventure pack, hardcore like Don't Starve [Together], with many dimensions, with more magic and importantly, not that much tech. I don't know about competing civs because I don't know what you'd really be competing on. Skyblock everything is something else being considered. A few MPT people are looking into a GregTech-based pack.
The competition thing could just be a modified mini-game like found here: http://skcraft.com/threads/the-diamond-throne-a-battle-of-ores-and-ingots.2771/ It doesn't need to be the focal point of the server. Sounds like what you have planned could be fun though.
The sky blocks would be a good idea, but how would it work? Eachy start on their own island?, Would there be some sort of spawn? As tiffyforos was saying, for the competition, The suggestion was also to be able to have more community spawn builds like on Vincent, the competition being an opportunity to centralise some things, even though you are allowed to be mostly independent. Galacticraft's space race aspect could be an example of competition between the factions, but I was mostly thinking it would mostly be relaxed, not really competitive, except maybe which capital looks better. From what I'm reading, people want something new that encourages players to work together, and many have said they like the civilisations idea. All I'm saying is that we give it a go, and if it flops, well at least we'll have tried that option. Greg tech seems like a great idea, and I would wholeheartedly support it. We could also combine it with the civilisations idea, or have it without, depending on people's opinion.
