We had that for a while. Automated mining of any sort was disabled and you had to mine manually, so the focus was more on mining tools and have less automated stuff. It was fun for a while but after that little experiment people were more than happy to have their quarries back.

But I'm all for getting people to play together... as long as I can still build my own small base of sorts. I'm very picky about my layouts and design, and I'm the "lone wolf" type, so I hate building/living together with others.

Fighting together is great fun though. One step in that direction would be harder bosses, and more bosses. It's boring if you can just roflstomp the ender dragon alone after like 3 hours of playing. If the dragon gets slightly stronger attacks and a lot more HP then you'd actually need to work together to beat it.

For boss fights, perhaps a scaling system like WoW uses would be good - in WoW's raids, fights are tuned around a minimum amount of players (which doesn't mean you can't bring less if you have some OP equipment), and if you bring more then the bosses scale up according to the number of players. This works very well for boss fights, as you have to play with other people, but it doesn't get easier if you bring more than necessary.

"Invasion" type encounters would be cool to, where you can summon a horde of mobs rushing at you, and perhaps have it rarely happen without a summon, as an event of sorts. Like a blood moon or something where more mobs spawn. (Yes I've been playing a lot of Terraria lately :p)

Then the End should also be periodically reset, every few days, or perhaps every day (automatically of course), so that farming ender pearls can't be automated quite as easily, and so that the dragon can be fought again.

Just off the top of my head, I may get more ideas but I gotta go work now.

A lot of people seem to like the idea of harder bosses and a more adventure/magic oriented pack, which we've never really had, so... it might spice things up a bit?

The problem with quest mods is they are quite server intensive doing a pack with exclusively quest mods and no tech might alleviate stress. I've noticed several Youtubers who do let's plays have also changed over to favoring smaller mod packs. SK had posted something about public packs and it might be a good idea to do a 3-6 month cycle of tech then quest mods.

I would like to add iChun's Hat Mod :) And as for a specific style, we should do a futuristic pack or a pack that requires us all to work together. Or a mod pack with different realms.

OK, Alice has always been great and it always will be so long as it is maintained well. So as a suggestion want mods to stay updated and have a resonable amount of changes throughout the life of the pack. Also, the city you spawn in should have a reason to come back later in the game. Maybe allow players an area to setup trading posts and create a currency system. Make it a community effort to progress.

I was always curious as to why there was no shop system like there is in Vincent. It makes even more sense to have a shop system in Alice as there are even more things to sell/barter for.

It was tried several times. Eventually some people that got to 'endgame' would always start mass producing expensive items and selling them for low prices or even giving them out ('to help others'), making whatever currency was used at the time worthless.

    I'm late but
Personally I wouldn't like to see Alice take some different turn to say an RPG or PVP pack...

I've wanted to get back into Minecraft recently. I can't wait for a new server (which I wanted to help with but stuff)

I don't think this is going to work out anyway, Alice was mostly inhabitated by tech people so going magic-heavy won't do unless we keep our current tech mods. Personally I feel the current tech/magic mods are alright, everyone can follow whatever path they want to progress, and this is all good. I never complained about the choice of mods, and I think few people did. We can't have every mod anyway.

(As long as we have tech mods, Chisel and Carpenter's Blocks I'm going to be happy with whatever though :p )

We really just need to get people to play together more, and fighting bosses seems like a no-brainer. Maybe gate some less important items behind them - people tend to go to great lengths for vanity items. Or things like AE's singularities, which are not necessary and don't hinder your progress but can be very useful. Just don't gate any important items or content which hinder players' progress, I don't think that forcing players to fight bosses is going to work. Minecraft isn't Terraria, it was always more about the building and crafting than about fighting. But expanding in that area gives us an additional layer of gameplay.

    ...

But honestly, I'm still longing for the old IC2/GregTech experience. Sure it was tedious - but not as much as IC2-exp, while GT's bronze age is actually good. Still, people stayed on the server longer because GT had a really long progression path and some crazy endgame items and machinery so everyone wanted to get there. And people played together more because stuff was super expensive, so two or more people working together made everything better. I remember in 1.2.5 there were very few people who actually played alone, and most of those lagged behind the others. I was one of them so I know. :/

Maybe we could try a smaller modpack with a bit less stuff, using Speiger's IC2 Classic which is compatible with many IC2-exp mods but is basically IC2 from 1.5.2. Pretty please?

I heard Greg was remaking GT again to fix all the things people hated about previous versions.
    Can't be sure though.

However it'll likely never be re-added now that people's minds are set

At this point GregTech is better than pure IC2. The bronze/steam age is really nice. If Greg would finally listen to the community instead of shoving his own way down our throats as if he knew what they liked best, that'd be great. Perhaps I'd actually try and deal with IC2 so I can play GT?

I was messing around with the GT6. Although it is still in development, I can say that GT 6 is slow to boot, and is all ores and tools. That's it.

Every time a brainstorm is done about modpack orientation, every time we're stuck at playstyle segregation :(
Only endless goal is "building" thanks to sandbox gameplay.

tl;dr : a skyland map as main world

we'll have to build skybridges and all to develop some kind of extensive suburb from spawn.
islands should be random 2x2 to 7x7 chunk size. "extensive base" could overlap many islands with artifical platforms.
i'd not put AE/AE2 because it creates brainless giant setups. Let's stick at good old sort'n'store setups.

That'd be cool and all... just some people would like it, some wouldn't, again, playstyle segregation.

I really like this idea. Different look makes it feel fresh. Of course a mining world is an absolute requirement for this, but we've always had a mining world anyway.

But then early game would be exactly the same for everyone - get a jetpack ASAP and fly away to a lonely island. I know I'd do this. We'd have to make jetpacks more expensive so it's not too easy.

Yeah, we need to enforce the "don't build ugly" rule a bit more, so we don't have 1-wide cobble and dirt bridges everywhere. Encourage people to make nice bridges and buildings. If the islands aren't too tiny (Proger's 2x2 to 7x7 chunks suggestion seems good) then we won't lack building materials.

Seriously, this is good. I'd love to have a different map for once. We've always had boring normal worlds. Simply changing the landscape can make you feel like you're playing a different game, I've learned that from custom maps... and Skyrim mods.

What about a division into two main factions: each would have their own spawn city, with players able to have their own area, but who contribute to their respective cities. It could be a relaxed competition between the factions for building, technology and resources. Maybe you could add galacticraft for a space race aspect? I dont know what you guys think about pvp servers, but personally, if this server does become pvp, it would be after a certain amount of time so each faction would have time to properly build up. I don't think there should be much pvp, this "competition" should be build based.

Anyway, that's my idea, please say what you like and what you don't like.

^ First playstyle segregation, now player segregation? Heh.

This definitely won't work if you're going to apply it to everyone. Alice has never been PVP-centric, but it always had PVP enabled - people were always able to do it as long as it was mutually agreed upon. If some players are interested they can do this as a project. Ask people if they're interested in some group PVP once the new server is up, and I'm sure a moderator is willing to help set it up if you can find some people to play this with, but don't expect everyone to join you. PVP is just not my cup of tea so I wouldn't partake, and I'm sure others feel the same.
