To that ONE guy who voted for "Host a new server": Eventually, whether intentionally or not, you might split from SKC and will be taking players away from SKC! Besides, who's gonna pay for hosting? Sk's been running the server for years without the DONATE button ._.(yes, I know, he had it at one point) P.S. Sk is a nice guy and a good owner and we really should be supporting him, not doing things our way
For the record, like I said I'm not voting. Also, I said, and quote "We could host our own server, while still using these forums etc. We want to stay the same community. I myself cannot pay for hosting, but we could set something up on patreon." You are right, we don't want to take players from skcraft, so we continue using these forums. Patreon for money if needed. I'm not sure what kind of server we are currently running on, I would start with a 50$ a month server to see if that is enough.
Now on first thought, we need an incredible server to run alice with 20 players like we normally do. However now that I think about it, lately we were lagging with 5 players. With or without actuall alice, we could have several "nodes." For example I can afford a server with 1GB of ram. We could then link the chat between servers, and add a mod that allows us to teleport between them, for example qcraft.
A couple of things: I understand people's frustration with Alice being down; also this thread is just suggestions. Alice is a bit of a mess because of badly written mods, buggy server software, lack of maintenance and above all players building laggy shit. It doesn't help. As someone who's hosted servers and built modpacks before, it's a LOT of work. I've spent entire days compiling modpacks, then slept, then spent the next day fixing the config files so that the pack actually RUNS. Running a server isn't just something you can do, either; you have to build the spawn, protect it, let players protect their stuff, and most of this requires Cauldron which is buggy and hard to get hold of. I'm open to helping set things up, but we should kind of just wait on SK.
Arrrggg, I totally forgot to mention that when we had the Donate button, not many actually knew about it. Sk didn't want to ran the server off ranks and what not to keeps the server going! It was supposed to be as vanilla as possible: Ops and players. Without a form of motivation(unless you can suggest one), no one will donate and without donates, I don't think you can keep the server running for long. I can understand your first point, but the only reason people are frustrated is be we love this server! If we didn't we would've just left and never come back. Also I felt like "players building laggy shit. " was directed at me xDDDD As for your second point, modpacks WERE a lot of work, but it isn't anymore. Making a mod pack now is so simple that even a dummy can do it! The question is the server side stuff P.S. Pengawin, you can't even run the client with 1gb of ram, let alone the server....or is there something that I didn't know about...?
I was thinking about testing purposes, also the server doesn't have to load all of those textures. Like I said I would expect us to need at least a 50 USD a month server. Mod packs still take work. But we have a mpt, I'm not saying we ditch all current mods/mpt members!
LordRedstone, I will the moment I get home! EDIT: To restate, THIS THREAD IS NOT ABOUT CURRENT MODS BEING USELESS. This is about there not being enough to maintain Alice!
Sigh...I am only saying that 'cause I tried it before... There are tools you use to make it less of a pain...stuff like IDFixMinus and what not... Now please stop acting like a little derp and MAN UP. As for the distribute part I can host it on something like dropbox which has a static link and on the launcher thing...The technic launcher works! Personally, I think the hardest part on starting a server is the "Written permissions" for distributing the modpack publicly. P.S. Stop making stuff sound hard when it's not and debugging a modpack is easier than you think
Can we stop arguing about whether or not a modpack would be easy or difficult to maintain? It's not the main topic of this thread, so let's try and keep the off-topic content to a minimum.
GUYS SHUT THE HECK UP. I have already said that we can always use the skcraft launcher! The launcher is made to support 3rd party modpacks! But that doesn't matter! Listsn to croxio
>.< Sorry, I hate it when people are being *censored* Sigh, bad habit, I just hate it when people make something simple sound overly complicated and then make themselves sound like a pro....
... We aren't making a mod pack *yet* You really aren't getting this. Alice is down. A large amount of people want it back up. Nobody here can get it back up. One suggestion is to add more people that can bring it back up. Another suggestion is to find another way to host Alice. We would use the EXACT same modpack, although it will need to be updated over time, just like normal. The idea is not to replace Alice. The idea is not to fragment the community. The idea is to get a playable server for all of us. Whether or not making a modpack is difficult is not relevant. I have done it before, we still have staff members, we still have mod pack developers to help. Who we don't have is SK himself. If there are concerns about making a modpack, this is not the correct thread.
Don't worry, the community has been fragmented and falling apart for a while now. Since certain mods got added, and even more since certain mods got removed. Yes, making a modpack is easy. Making a balanced, stable modpack and keeping people happy at the same time? Hell no.
I host web servers, and it wouldn't be to hard to modify one of them to run a Minecraft server (I'm in Chicago). That being said, that is obviously the worst option. SK is busy (I presume with Sponge, but maybe with something else), as well as, it appears, most of the other mods. If someone was to make another server, I doubt SK would be ok with them using his forum (I probably wouldn't be ok with it). Jus' sayin'. Also: who would these new mods be? FINALLY: I appreciate all that the SK and the team have done. I think I speak for almost everyone when I say: you guys are awesome and we love you.
Please, don't tell me to "man up". You haven't played any of my modpacks because none are publicly available. Modpack creation by dumping mods and config files into folders and zipping them is easy, modpack creation on something like Solder is hard. This is going off-topic a lot, sorry. You did a great job before, toni, putting up with constant "hurry up and get the new modpack out", considering that you're basically the main compiler of the initial modpack. As someone who has made even a small, private modpack I constantly got yelled at to "fix the pack", "add this mod", and I know how annoying it can get, considering that the people I was playing with stopped playing because a mod that they wanted couldn't be added (it was broken in some way). But I think that the community here is so large that Alice wouldn't die without a fight. If the MPT stopped doing updates (between MC versions), a whole team of people probably including me would make one. If you guys are tired of this, go ahead, I know how broken shit is. That's kind of what this topic is about. (Sorry for huge-ass post.)
Apparently, according to Siioh, the update is done...we are waiting for testing and what not...which (I think) is sk's job
