^ i think it would be sweet to have spawn resemble this but the floating island idea is really cool to maybe combine them ? too ?

    Ideas ideas...
1: Something similar to Venice, Italy?
    2: Some kind of Eden/paradise?
    3: Some kind of hell?
4: Something like a space-station and you need to beam down to the planet?
    5: Atlantis style?
    6: Sci-fi city?
    7: Ancient cultures like mayan/egyptian/greek?

We should perhaps make a poll with all the ideas and have people vote :p

I like 4, 5, and 6 out of those... 4 would be pretty sweet.

Yeah, I really like this idea too.

Perhaps we could also use some mods in 1.7 (just some) for building the spawn, such as chisel.

A Venice/Italy would be cool. it would be like the idea of floating islands, it could have a inland area like mirrdin e described, and it would be pretty cool

We've already done Venice at least twice in the past.

Some recommendations have included significant machinery; I recommend against it. The closer to vanilla the spawn is, the less laggy it is likely to be.

The recommendations cover three main areas: theme, terrain, and decorations. These are the items I've seen suggested so far:

    Themes
    • Normal (realistic pre-modern architecture)
    • Steampunk
    • Fey / Magic Woodland
    • Ruins / Apocalypse
    • Futuristic / Space
    • Ancient (Mayan / Egyption / Greek)
    • Theological (Heaven / Hell)
    Terrain
    • Normal (surface, mostly flat, shore optional)
    • Natural / Incorporated Vegetation
    • Floating Islands
    • Underground - Natural Caves
    • Underground - Man-Made (includes Space Station)
    • Steep Hillside
    • Water Streets
    Decoration
    • Background motion (conveyors, railcars, pipes)
    • Teleporters
    • Public Transportation (rail)
    • Drawbridge
    • Penguins
While some combinations are more natural than others, they are primarily separate choices. The terrain / shape of the spawn has a lot of practical aspects (ease of navigation, can you fly, does it adapt well to different render distances, etc). The themes though are mostly fanciful, with the flavor of the terrain just depending on what tickles our fancy and we can make look nice. Decoration requires more development (and mods), and may be laggy.

My personal recommendation is to have a steep hill as the terrain. But I'm fine with a steampunk city on a steep hill, a fey town, a ruin, ancient city, etc... I can work with any theme, I just like the practical and aesthetic qualities that building on a steep hill get you: easy travel, easy to get an overview or make a map from a screenshot, unique (we have never done it before), not claustrophobic, can take advantage of longer render distances, etc.

Whether it's a 'normal' theme (standard pre-industrial buildings, like the pictures I posted), Rivendell, Hobbiton, Minas Tirith... I don't care. There are a lot of ways to build a hillside town, and a lot of iconic cities that use them (LotR being a great source).

My idea of Decoration involved flying Railcraft carts MFR converyor belts And prob lots of motion and lag.. but it seems really cool in my head. Do you guys think you would like all the machines and stuff or would it be to intense for your Computer?

I have a lot of FPS issues an Alice; my computer can barely run it. 1fps at OB is common. I would like to avoid that it the new spawn, but some moving objects is unlikely to bring my system to its knees.
