But it's still the same Java they're developing.

That's besides the point. I'm saying that Sun's JDK was around long before OpenJDK. How could Sun's JDK/JRE be based off something that didn't exist at the time?

My point still stands. When OpenJDK was first conceived Sun's JDK was already around.

Well, obviously. Sun themselves created OpenJDK in order to make the commercial Java open source. They promised to do this in 2006 and released OpenJDK 2007, though only making it completely non-dependant on closed-source software in 2009. They had to keep it separate from Sun Java though because it still contains a few closed-source parts which they are not allowed to use in OpenJDK. Oh and by the way, all this happened before 2010 when Sun was bought by Oracle.

You see, just because it was like this 10 years ago doesn't mean it is like this today.

Today Sun/Oracle just develop OpenJDK and release it, then every few versions they put a few commercial things in it and release it as closed source. Java programs which make use of these closed-source things will not run well in OpenJDK. Minecraft likely has a few minor functions that make use of these which is why some, but not all, OpenJDK users experience problems.
Like I said, if I had any random crashes and the likes, I'd long have switched to Sun Java. I just try to use open-source software as much as possible without giving myself a hard time.
