I glance at my laptop. I'm not gonna be slaved to it and go to it every <=10min. My base has chunkloaders but I don't rely on it too often because the enderpearl on top of it to signal whether or not it's working is alot of the time, in the non-working state. 'just don't afk' hmmm.... that never occured to me along with the players on the server afking for days at a time.

    Summary:
SK is asking if world anchors should be disabled in the overworld to help lighten the server load that some chunks generate.

    Possibilities:
Limit world anchors to one per person.
    Completely disable world anchors.
This leads to a discussion on Alts and AFK rules.
Update GregTech to allow overclocker upgrades which reduces the number of machines and need for massive ME Networks.
Get Immibis Dimensional Anchors. These seems far more customizable than the current world anchors. They might be more efficient.

What freedom is being taken away? This is a video game...not a country...stop being negative and think about the positive effects of sending afk people to spawn.

    • Not as many chunks are loaded if all the afk people are sent to spawn hence reducing some lag from 30+ chunks being loaded constantly.
    • No more people complaining about dying at the XP farm because of the sword of the zephyr, muskets, etc. Spawn is a no pvp area so no player besides hunger is allowed (or shouldn't be allowed).
I like the idea of a AFK jail. I've seen it done on a few servers and it actually works well. The way I've seen it done is afk people are teleported to random jail spots (it's cycled) and the person in it can't talk or move but has to PM a staff member saying they are un-afk and the mod tps them out.

Sounds like a pain in the ass but really it helps the server out a lot and that's not what you guys are getting at. You guys are upset because you or your alt (you) might be kicked/sent to another for afking for 5+ hours when actually you should be just logging off. When you stay on constantly like that rather afk or not you hog server resources..1 person afk doesn't do anything to the server....5 people is slightly noticeable....15 people afk starts to take its toll. Stop being selfish and start trying to help the server rather then yourselves please.

We know that is what SK is asking but we're also talking about if we disable or reduce the limit of anchors that people will bring their alts back on the server and do the same thing.

The most likely reason for unloading certain chunks is because they are running massive or highly inefficient ME Networks. I have seen SK mention several times that Applied Energistics is using 40%-50% of the cpu. AE seems to be the main cause of the problem and I would prefer to address it directly rather than impose limits what other mods are doing. Like bees and tesseracts. Granted, if you start messing with AE it will affect how most people are using other mods like IC2, GregTech, Thermal Expansion, and Forestry. However, all of those mods were designed to run without AE.

To get right to the root of this. I think the problem actually lies with the number of items people are trying to store. AE is wonderful for storing, transporting, and crafting items and so is Logistics Pipes and Red Power2. Even the new conveyor mod is pretty good at sorting and transport. I think we should examine/discuss how automatic item storage, transport, and crafting is affecting the server.

I hate to say that we should "limit item storage" because hsun is right. Imposing limits on play style will hurt the server and drive players away. So, instead of limits. Are there better ways to setup automatic systems that do not hog server resources?

Would it be better to create a centralized crafting cube that everyone can use?

Anytime you have a system with people you have opinions and to keep people in you need to allow for freedom of playstyle.

Assuming that the people arguing for afks and alts are suing said things is asking for issues. I do not use such and I hate such but you don't go FORCING people to do things, you come to a agreement over things that are soft banned when it comes to behaviours.

EDIT: Likewise to your request of us, you should also look at this from two perspectives. Be a devil's advocate.

Even if we didn't have AE, it'd be another automations mod hogging the server cpu. For example, most of everyone switched over to AE from LP and it didn't get much better. It all boils down to us needing automations. No one in their right mind would manually do tedious things that can be done automatically.

Exactly, so to restate my question again. Are there better ways to setup automatons that do not hog server resources?

To go further, should we encourage player behavior so that massive or inefficient systems are unnecessary? A behavior that I have witnessed is a player saving every single cobblestone and dirt block mined from a quarry or frame bore, this is unnecessary.

With most of my experience with different mods and automation, I would say "maybe".

In most of my time playing with mods, I've never really seen any other single way of automating. Mostly you had LP, but then that got overtaken by AE with it's ability to compact automation and autocrafting into much less space then LP required. With that being said, they are both equally use too much CPU to be used in bulk (but that doesn't stop people).

On the server our group played on for a number of weeks when alice was waiting to be reset, it had a number of mods clumped together (the owner was a bit of a hoarder when it came to adding mods), but it had a lot of the mods you would normally see, logipipes, factorization, ect ect; even a few not so common ones. But after an accidental map reset, all of us started playing (gk glitch and I), and we built a base around managers with the addition of routers and infinitubes for ore processing and the sorts instead of LP, it was nicer, and we're prouder of it; But in the end we scrapped it to just use LP.

On a separate note: When you talk about massive or unnecessary, I feel it's just wasting your own breath. Nowadays with AE, it doesn't matter, you can have 1 block that could store at the most of about 8,000,000 items. If it were still the days when we were using LP, my views would be different. But atm, not so much.

    :Bottom line:
There are not very many better ways you've got to setup automations. Apart from LP and AE, there's stuff like CC interactive sorter and just CC in general, RP sortron and managers, even LP or AE paired with routers or infinitubes could be a lot nicer to the server in terms of CPU usage. But nothing as easy as AE or LP sadly, especially without the CPU resources hogging.

I currently use a Personal Anchor at my power stuff for my quarries.

I think it would be best to limit the number of anchors instead of disabling altogether.

I've thought about this from both sides. If you read the comments though most of the people are complaining because they will stop having to AFK and don't wish for afk kicks or anything of the sort....which is selfish. They'd rather have the ability to sit there and afk for periods of time and hog the server resources that should go to the ones who are actually actively playing on the server rather then just sitting in a spot and glancing at the screen to see if the server restarts. I use to try to play MC and another system to play but I realized it's not fair to the players of the MC servers that I just sit there afk loading chunks while nothing is happening. Yes I realize the need to have anchors or w/e to load machines that have to process numerous stacks of stuff but at the same time...it's a game and you can set an anchor down which takes less resources to load then an Alt does. I also realize most of the people commenting on here are kids and while their opinion is just as needed as us adults... you can't whine about having to stop afking when actually if you stop afking and stop loading numerous anchors...the server WILL run better and faster.

Yeah like my ME system has 142k cobble and 7-9k of dirt which I can't recycle it fast enough with the setup I have laid out in my house. I don't WANT the cobblestone and dirt but I can't exactly get rid of 142k of cobble stone fast.

Then just export it to a incinerator.

That's what I'm saying. I can't really import/export anything with the layout of my house xD I'd have to completely take down my ME system and all of my machines and move them closer then try to figure out how to run Glass Fiber Cable and ME cable to both machines which sounds easy but if you've seen my house it's not so easy.

Nah this house was built by my fiancee Aelyndra, so when we brought my machines over, we had to kind of just placed machines where we could.

AE is the best/most efficient because of compact storage. But how do you get those 8 million items into the system? One. Stack. At. A. Time. This is what I'm trying to point out, each of those transactions eats cpu. Why is it necessary to put 8 million items into your ME Network? Not to mention getting them out again.

Not to sound hypocritical, but if you're producing more cobblestone than you can currently scrap, then you need more recyclers. Or reduce the amount of cobble coming into your system by incinerating it before it gets that far. If you plan it out, the cobblestone could completely bypass the ME Network and go into the recyclers or incinerator this way you aren't eating cpu on ME Network transactions. Even a plain BC diamond pipe that filters cobble into a void pipe would be easy to put between a tesseract and a ME Interface.

I would enjoy a challenge like that.

    On AFK players:

In this case I'm more worried about the automation stuff in those loaded chunks.

Which is why I agree with sending afkers to a "waiting room."
